Roberts confirmation hearing Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Anybody else watching? Roberts seems to be handling himself as well as anyone could hope, though he's stumbled a time or two in the last hour or so. At this point in the day, I'd expect to see that from anyone, though.

Affirming belief in the right to be left alone
Affirming belief in the right to privacy
Coming oh, so close to making Ted Kennedy's head explode during the 1982 Voting Rights Act discussion

EDIT: spelling

Full PM-box? Change here!

I missed most of it, although I did get to hear some:

Being questioned by Sen. Biden - the senator complains how he has no time left, how Roberts is filibustering etc. Following the recess, the NPR panel mentioned that Biden had spent about 7 minutes towards the beginning apparently just talking (I missed the beginning part so I don't know what he said)

Being questioned by the Senator from Mobile IIRC who went on and on about the Vting Rights Act and how good it was bla bla bla and don't forget Louisiana has the most black officials or whatever.

I caught those two while driving home, so I probably missed some context, but they were pretty explicit statements.

DanS... I'm in law school, and we've got it on a big screen in the Moot Courtroom, so it's the thing to do between classes. Beats studying.

I saw the comments in context, and I think, while guarded, they express a view that the right to privacy and abortion are grounded in precedent and Roberts respects that and would have to think long and hard before overturning precedent (of any form). It was in a wierd situation, but he seemed to look as if he'd be a Justice Kennedy on abortion.

If you don't mind me asking, where are you at law school? Am I remembering that you went to Auburn for undergrad?

Cool. That's in Birmingham, right? If I were your rebel classmates, I would definately lay low this time of year

So I take it you're in your first weeks of law school? That first year is a pain in the ass, but 2nd and 3rd year were a blast, for me anyway.

I wish I knew where I would be practicing in 3 years. I'll be in Indianapolis for another year and a half and then who knows where, my wife finishes her phd in 2007 and we will relocate, and take another bar :grrr:

Right on Birmingham. First day of orientation, when we were all dressed up for pictures, I happened to sit next to a guy in a bowtie and white shirt at lunch. We introduced ourselves and he mentioned that he was from Ole Miss. I told him I had already figured that.

First weeks, indeed, and I'm enjoying it so far, but definitely seeing the pain in the ass factor. I keep hearing that about 2nd and 3rd year. Can't wait.

It helps immensely that we have quite a bit of Strikeresque talent in the class, too.

COLUMN by David Broder in Sunday's Washington Post. Broder is probably the most respected US political columnist today, and a life-long Democrat.

Roberts's Sterling Showing

By David S. Broder

Sunday, September 18, 2005; Page B07

The question of whether Judge John Roberts is qualified to be chief justice of the United States has been rendered moot by his performance in the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings. He is so obviously -- ridiculously -- well-equipped to lead government's third branch that it is hard to imagine how any Democrats can justify a vote against his confirmation.
.....

Finally, he said, his recent judicial service has deepened his sense of humility. "Part of that modesty has to do with being open to the considered views of your colleagues on the bench. I would say that's one of the things I've learned the most in the past two years on the Court of Appeals: how valuable it is to function in a collegial way . . . other judges being open to your views; you being open to theirs. They, after all, are in the same position you're in. They've read the same briefs. They've heard the same arguments. . . . If they're seeing things in a very different way, you need to be open to that and try to take another look at your view and make sure that you're on solid ground."

This is so far from the caricature of a conservative ideologue depicted by some of the interest groups that their attacks seem absurd.
.....

Roberts's only problem is that he has set a standard so high, it will be difficult for the next nominee to measure up.

If the Democrats are smart, they will not bow to their interest groups but instead will embrace this extraordinary nominee and challenge President Bush, who has at least one more vacancy to fill, to "send us another Roberts."

And today from CNN
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The senior Democrat on the Judiciary Committee announced Wednesday he will vote to confirm John Roberts for chief justice of the United States after leading lawmakers met with President Bush to discuss candidates for the other high court vacancy.
....

Moments after Leahy spoke, Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, who also serves on the Judiciary Committee, announced he would vote against Roberts.

"There is clear and convincing evidence that John Roberts is the wrong choice for chief justice," Kennedy said. "I oppose the nomination, and I urge my colleagues to do the same."

Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, who lost the presidential election to Bush last year, also planned to announce his opposition to Roberts' confirmation on Wednesday.

I watched a large chunk of the hearings. Aside from omitting a comment about what complete and utter fools some Dem's on the committee have made of themselves, nothing more needs to be said.
