Today, the Senate voted down an independent commission into hurricane Katrina, along party lines. Tellingly, David Vitter (R-Louisiana) chose not to vote.

See, that's where you'd be wrong. My understanding is that the only commission that will investigate this will be one set up entirely by Bush. Which is great if you want only state and local to be found to blame for the debacle, but if you want the truth...

Having separate comissions for Red states and Blue states That's what's really going to truly unify the federal republic.

Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

If I get motivated enough, I'll link to a Knight Ridder investigative story which found that the director of Homeland Security, not the head of FEMA, was the one with the authority to declare a national emergency *before* Hurricane Katrina struck land. IOW, "Brownie" wasn't the right guy to sack ... just a figurehead, really.

Interesting. Someone must have reminded Congress that they have investigative authority.

For some reason, whenever I see you talking about American issues, I have the urge to vomit.

They can also be proud to know that VP Cheney wasn't quite as inert about the disaster as previously thought:

quote:

According to a report in the Hattiesburg American, Cheney's office placed calls to the Southern Pines Electric Power Association on Aug. 30 and Aug. 31, insisting that the agency immediately repair two electrical substations that supply power to Atlanta-based Colonial Pipeline Co., a company that pumps gasoline and diesel from the Gulf Coast to the Northeast.

Southern Pines complied with the order from Cheney's office, the paper says -- taking a risk that the repair work would knock out power throughout its system and delaying by at least a day efforts to restore power to two rural hospitals and a number of water systems in Mississippi.

Neither Cheney's office nor Colonial Pipeline would respond to questions from the paper about the vice president's directives.
