Ang Lee's film of E. Annie Proulx's novella, 'Brokeback Mountain', has won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
It's based on a story about two cowboys who, when working together, fall in love and carry on an affair for 20 years.
Apparently some 'actors' were reluctant to play the lead roles- no doubt disliking method acting, or perhaps wanting to play something that might stretch their abilities...
Playing child-killing rapist psychopaths or cannibal cult killers will definitely improve your fanbase, but playing a homo ?
Oh no, wouldn't want to portray someone the public couldn't identify with.

The film is adapted from a story by E Annie Proulx and stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger as cowboys whose secret love affair spans 20 years.
Lee beat off competition from 18 other films, including George Clooney's favoured Good Night, and Good Luck.
Lee, maker of Oscar nominee Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has won a global reputation as an eclectic film-maker.
The Taiwan-born director's other films include the comic book blockbuster The Hulk, released last year, and Sense and Sensibility, an adaptation of the classic Jane Austen novel.

"Where Ledger and his co-star ran into obstacles was in filming their relatively explicit love scenes.
Ledger says the awkward circumstances were made easier as he and Gyllenhaal instantly struck up a rapport after recognizing each other's courage in taking on the challenging roles....
When it came time to shoot their love scenes, Ledger admits he and Gyllenhaal were so uncomfortable that rehearsal was out of the question. In the end, they simply rolled up their sleeves and dove into the material, adding a bit of liquid courage to the mix to aid the process.
"The time between action and cut, like when you're doing any scene, you have to harness the power of belief, convince yourself and commit to it, but believe me, just getting home after those days and feeling completely violated--just being *beep* torn apart.
It was just hard as hell and it was just heavy. We felt it was necessary (to do those scenes) and if we didn't there would have been a lot of people who would have been upset. That and a few beers and away you go."

Curiously enough, most Chinese I've asked find Lee's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" to be dull, "just another kung fu film", many are puzzled why westerners think it's worthy of any notice.
I've asked them what they thought of the music, the lighting, the parallel stories of foiled love, the unusual number of strong female characters ... they are unimpressed. "Boring!" |
As someone who spent many friday and saturday nights (when young) at the local Golden Harvest and Shaw theatres, I'd have to agree. I still dont get what all the fuss over "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was about.
Where was the guy who, after being shot with poisoned darts, could force them to corkscrew out of his body? Now there's a character in a movie! Thank you Sir Run Run (Shaw).
Gay cowboys - another ho hum! Its just a front for another chinese assault on the american way of life!
