Don't Get Even, Get Ang Lee Full PM-box? Change here!

Ang Lee's film of E. Annie Proulx's novella, 'Brokeback Mountain', has won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

It's based on a story about two cowboys who, when working together, fall in love and carry on an affair for 20 years.

Apparently some 'actors' were reluctant to play the lead roles- no doubt disliking method acting, or perhaps wanting to play something that might stretch their abilities...

Playing child-killing rapist psychopaths or cannibal cult killers will definitely improve your fanbase, but playing a homo ?

Oh no, wouldn't want to portray someone the public couldn't identify with.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0388795/

The trailer:

Ang Lee's gay cowboy film Brokeback Mountain has won the coveted Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
The film is adapted from a story by E Annie Proulx and stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger as cowboys whose secret love affair spans 20 years.

Lee beat off competition from 18 other films, including George Clooney's favoured Good Night, and Good Luck.

Lee, maker of Oscar nominee Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has won a global reputation as an eclectic film-maker.

The Taiwan-born director's other films include the comic book blockbuster The Hulk, released last year, and Sense and Sensibility, an adaptation of the classic Jane Austen novel.

So he directed one poorly received film- thankfully he's still in there - the way Hitchcock kept going after 'Jamaica Inn'.

I can think of several directors who have gone on directing after more than one piss poor film.

I loved Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and probably we get to see nice landscapes in this one as well.
Ice Storm was another great one, though I've to admit I've only seen it in parts.

Homosexuality among fronteer cowboys was not entirey unknown, and was actually rather more frequent that most people would like to imagine. Similar to sailors and prisoners, it was situational homosexuality, occassioned by the rather severe lack of women available.

Curiously enough, most Chinese I've asked find Lee's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" to be dull, "just another kung fu film", many are puzzled why westerners think it's worthy of any notice.

I've asked them what they thought of the music, the lighting, the parallel stories of foiled love, the unusual number of strong female characters ... they are unimpressed. "Boring!"

I wasn't suggesting it was.

I simply used it as an example I was familiar with (being a Hitchcock fan), and to illustrate the ability of a director to carry on with a body of work after poor reviews for one film.

The merits of the films didn't come into it.

I read the short story in the New Yorker years ago, and it was very good. I hope Lee can bring that same quality to the film. He's done good stuff before, so I'm optimistic.

I've read everything Proulx's written save for her latest book.

I think she's a terrific writer, and very skilled at evoking a mental picture.

I was terribly disappointed with the casting of Kevin Spacey in the film of 'The Shipping News'- not because of his acting skills, but because he just didn't match what I'd seen in my mind's eye from Proulx's descriptions of Quoyle.

I didn't realize she wrote "The Shipping News" too. That was pretty good, though I agree about Spacey. Judi Dench on the other hand was fantastic.

I'd pay to see her read out the Yellow Pages Business Directory- or the logarithmic tables.

I first saw her on stage when I was at school- she played the role of Imogen in 'Cymbeline'.

I'm very pleased at her success on film as well as on stage- talent like hers deserves to be seen by a much wider audience.

I think the Hulk was a decent (though not great) movie. I don't see why everyone is so down on it all the time. Sure it doesn't live up to Spider-man or X-Men, but its still a decent movie, same with Daredevil.

I'm not gonna vouch for Elektra though, I didn't even go see it..

"Where Ledger and his co-star ran into obstacles was in filming their relatively explicit love scenes.

Ledger says the awkward circumstances were made easier as he and Gyllenhaal instantly struck up a rapport after recognizing each other's courage in taking on the challenging roles....

When it came time to shoot their love scenes, Ledger admits he and Gyllenhaal were so uncomfortable that rehearsal was out of the question. In the end, they simply rolled up their sleeves and dove into the material, adding a bit of liquid courage to the mix to aid the process.

"The time between action and cut, like when you're doing any scene, you have to harness the power of belief, convince yourself and commit to it, but believe me, just getting home after those days and feeling completely violated--just being *beep* torn apart.

It was just hard as hell and it was just heavy. We felt it was necessary (to do those scenes) and if we didn't there would have been a lot of people who would have been upset. That and a few beers and away you go."

As someone who spent many friday and saturday nights (when young) at the local Golden Harvest and Shaw theatres, I'd have to agree. I still dont get what all the fuss over "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was about.

Where was the guy who, after being shot with poisoned darts, could force them to corkscrew out of his body? Now there's a character in a movie! Thank you Sir Run Run (Shaw).

Gay cowboys - another ho hum! Its just a front for another chinese assault on the american way of life!
