Your best bet would be to check out the "Great Library" thread at the top of the adjacent Civ 2 Strategy forum. It contains just about everything you need to know.

Thats a great place to start...
If you are looking for the MP experience, go download ICQ (and instant messager software that most of the MP players use) from ICQ.com.

Then, post your ICQ number in the ICQ Number players thread.

Then keep an eye out for games starting, or post your intent to want to play.

Not really, but that doesn't matter! Your first MP games will be very humbling (or as in my case, they still are!)...

Besides, have you ever landed on Alpha Centauri with only having one city ever during the entire game, deity level, raging hordes?

Ah, almost forgot! The indoctrinate part... Never, ever go into monarchy or republic asap... Those early governments are bad, I tell you!

On the other hand, I go into Monarchy asap. Even quicker, if possible. There you are - your first conflicting advice.

No, go into Republic. Monarchy is waste of time. From Republic, go to Democracy and/or trade. Always have a destination in mind when researching.

Well, Republic is fine if you have shield support and happiness under control.
