Long turns? Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

I just waited for Alexanders Horse to have a one hour turn.

What are some of the longest turns you have ever had to sit through?

Actually I didn't finish my turn properly because of all the complaints I did warn you it was going to be a long turn. Basically because I was invading finbar by sea with 60 units and then to achieve all the objectives I wanted I had to shuttle troops and spies around

I took 8 cities off him and 2 wonders in 1 turn after all that (of which he got back 1 wonder city the next turn). That takes time

But in future I won't be complaining by kingchat about long turns because I can now see it only slows the moving player down

Now that the dirty work is done, my future turns in that game will be much quicker

I went through some very long turns. Fortunately, never saw 1h turn but I had to wait 6x half an hour when playing KenThur in same session (we played 30 min. time limit). Then I finally went crazy, turned off PC and never showed up to continue.

I'm normally fast to move too but its not every day that you take 8 cities off a human opponent in 1 turn. This was the decisive turn of the whole game.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Depends on the player (micro-manager or not) and amount of units to move, but I have experienced an hour turns with some players often. It simply takes a lot of time to move a lot of units strategically. Some do it faster then others. And micromanaging takes time too.

Time is valuable and should be kept to an acceptable minimum for all the players involved. If it is a problem for some in the game then sacrifices should be made to harmonise until an agreeable time limit is reached.

Once when I was first playing online my turns were incredibly long for me: the game was time limited to seems like 20-30 minutes and I endured very long lag and moving 3 squares took maybe 15 endless seconds. Needless to say at the point in the game where there was lots of troops to move I could not move all my forces. Hehe! I remember having somewhere near 12 stealth fighters in Crusthavn alone that had not even been fortified or sentried let alone moved!!! Happily enough things moved to cause the timely surrender of the other players and one fought to the end. This game was the first time a nuclear device was planted on my soil, and it was a shock cuz up til then I thought SDI's protected all such things...

Haven't we all learned so much from playing online and exchanging ideas on this forum? Some things so obvious, yet at one time unknown, others would never have been revealed to us without reading it. For example I may have played for 10 years and never realized revolutions occured in a regular pattern. Yet in my mind in SP all the games limits were reached. Far from it!

Each of us gained some, and each of us has shared some to others. Some day there will be Civ3!!

8 cities in one turn is a pretty good excuse if you ask me. But the time it took gives horse a big advantage beyond just the benefits of picking off 8 cities -- presumably Finbar had time to consume so much alcohol while waiting that his counterattack was somewhat stumbling.

Henrik: go into the civ II strategy section and find oedo's topic titled "xoxoxo". Basically, he discovered that revolutions can only occur every 4 turns, and the years don't change. You'll find a chart of the years in the thread. Now, the only hard part is remembering to revolt when you discover monarchy (or whatever) and the next revolution year is 3 turns away. I forget at least half the time, it seems. Sometimes more than once.

The longest turn I think I ever took was about 15 minutes. (Taking a handful of War4's cities in a moment of treachery).

30 minutes time limit!!!!!!!!! Why bother setting a limit? Why bother playing?

The longest turn that I've seen someone do was MING. He passed out and it took us 45 minutes before we gave up on him.

An occasion long turn to attack has never bothered me.(unless i'm the one being attacked, because than it even seems longer )
BUT, 4 or 5 long turns due to 100s of caravans moving is intolarable. Some people can do it quickly, by spending the time in between turns making lists to facilitate moving. If you're checking supply and demand while you're moving as few as half a dozen, and maximizing cities at the same time, You're the reason why time limits exist.

But the worst is when some players takes 5 minutes + prior to 3000 bc or even earlier. How long does it take to make at most 2 or 3 decisions? Or when a player has placed his first two cities and you know he has no units and his turn still take over a minute.

I move faster than most. (sometimes slow down a hair, deep into a session if I've consumed a case of beer and other distractions)

I do believe in no time limits. You should never be limited if you actually need the time to conquer the world.

I think it matters whether that kind of time is routine or not. An ocassional turn of great length is justified by substantial needs or results. As long as someone is *doing* something with the time, I don't think it is that bad.

I have to admit that I don't often have anything worth doing that would take so much time.

But that is just me. If I could take 8 cities from a good opponent, yeah, and hour sounds OK. Did I understand that there was some warning about the time taken? That would help.

Words that are so true...... especially in simul play when you end up losing a turn of movement everytime you reload if you only get 8 turns in in three hours and you have to reconnect players twice..... makes for very inefficient civing

Again... faster connections help with moving..... Deity is slow because of his connection...... his slow brain plays a minor role in the time

Rah your treachery made me respect your civ abilities on a whole new level

connections are the biggest plague..... i don't know too many civers whom take all that long to be honest..... especially since Xin never plays anymore and Milo has retired

Oh chill out Slowwhand, it was the decisive turn of game - knocking finbar out. I warned the players it was going to be a long turn. I launched a seaborne invasion using about sixty units and took 8 cities. It was an intricate manoeuvre.

Finbar only stayed in the game for 2 turns after that, so there's a time saving for you

I look forward to doing the same to you one day Slowwhand

Yeah, I didn't have a particular problem with the time he took. I could see what he was doing. There's no way around taking an eon with that sort of invasion force. Which isn't to say I didn't join Hydey in taking the p*ss out of Horse for it. After all, not to would've been unAustralian.

A couple of other things in my defence

. It was the first turn of the session so there was the usual hello blather and farting around.

. Finbar dropped and we had to restart. That cost about 20 minutes.

So I think the actual turn time was 30-40 minutes. Turns before and since have not been as long.

But its a nice troll on Horse

Has anyone ever played a MP game complete with a low time limit? Something like 5 minutes a turn - no matter what.

It would give CIV some RTS feel. Also the defender has a chance to defend before 20 cities are gone. If you have a 100 units to move you better move the important ones first!

oh, and long turns... that's why I don't play MP anymore. All night for what? 15 turns that in a SP game takes me 1 minute. CIV II is not a MP game, not a good one. I hope the AI in CIV 3 is a lot better.
