Help, can't find the city-supports-units map in new city display Full PM-box? Change here!

In ToT, you can choose between a new and old style city display. I've never played Civ II (only ToT), so I have no feeling for the old city display; the new one seems just totally better to me.

EXCEPT THAT the old city display has a MAP selection you can click to see a map of the known world with the location of that city's supported units. I cannot find the same capability in the new city display. WHERE IS IT? PLEASE TELL ME!

Unfortunately, switching back and forth between city displays is a very poor way to deal with this problem, because you have to EXIT THE CITY DISPLAY before you change formats. When you exit the display, the game may hit you with ten things you must attend to first, then you have to remember to change the city display format and go back to ... what was that city with the resource problem?...

Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Um...we didn't put the Foreign Service Map in the new City Display. Most of the folks we talked to about it said they really didn't use it very much. If you need to find a unit, you can always click on its icon (when the Support display is selected) and choose "Center Map on Unit".

If people are not using that map-support display much, I understand why you took it out. So, if my citizens are unhappy because some of their military units are far afield, how do I figure out which units these are? There ought to be something better than clicking on each one separately in the support display to figure out where each one is. Is there a better way?

Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

Not really. Even the old Foreign Service Map is very vague.

If it's any help, what I generally do is make sure that the first three letters of all my city names are distinct, so that whenever a unit comes up active, I know exactly where it's deriving support from. (I always rename captured cities.) This strategy allows me to survey my unit support network every turn and keep a pretty good overall knowledge of what's what. It's not a perfect system, of course; in the late game, when I often have zillions of units, I tend to reorganize so that all units stay near their home cities.

Another useful technique is to make units do a "reassignment pass-through" whenever they get close to another of my cities. Basically, I go a little out of the way to run the unit into the city, switch its support to that town, then send it on its way. That ensures that the nearest city is home for every unit. (Naturally, I don't do this if the city is already struggling.) It's a little tedious at first, but it very quickly becomes a habit--something you don't even notice you're doing.
