The status area can report the wrong terrain type, because it did not update properly in response to an "n" order.
To make this bug happen, take a buteo flier on the surface world and type "n" twice (to go to the cloud map and back to the surface map). The status area will often report that the terrain the flier is on is "sky", although it is in fact now on solid ground. Clicking the worldmap up and down arrows (to go to any other map and back) corrects the problem.
