How can I dissolve (my own) cities?

If the population is low, just build settlers or engineers untill you are out of citizens in the city and the game asks "Making this unit will disband the city.
ODisband city?
ODelay production?
If you have a higher population, turn all squares into entertainers or other things like that, and then sell all the buildings so you won't lose money when you disband the city, and when the people are starved and the population starts to go down, build enginneers or settlers until it is disbanded

Thank you very much. Because I have war with the French and I often conquer their cities and I haven't enough units on the continent and can't so protect my new cities. And then they take them back and have my modern invention.
