Yes - there's lots of things that the AI gets that the human player doesn't - e.g. triremes that can brave the ocean, instant cruise missile batteries as soon as they get rocketry, etc. etc.
I wouldn't get too excited about the demographics stats - ltswww.epfl.ch/~winkler/civ2.html#Demographics should give you some background - if not for annual income.
I'm not sure what you mean by the "Top 7 Civilizations" chart. It's understood that the PowerChart relates to a tribe's score, as is the case with Top 5 cities. The calculation for scoring accounts for number of happy and content citizens, number of Wonders, barbarians, pollution, future tech' and and peace. In scenarios this is sometimes replaced by the objectives achieved.
