When ToT starts up, it usually assumes my save files are in the "Test of time" directory, so I always have to click a subdirectory to get to them. Occasionally, it actually remembers the save directory and starts in the right place. (When I played hot seat, it started in the "original" directory, so I had to click up and then down into fantasy...)
What action makes ToT remember the current save directory?

It does not asume that the save is in the ToT directory, just all the saves are usuly in it's branches. This makes it easyer.

In win 95 and win 98, the saves assume the ToT directory (each time you load civ). If you are, say, playing the fantasy game, the first time you save you have to choose the fantasy directory explicitly. After that (of course), additional saves go to the same directory until you exit civ.
In WIN 2000 HOWEVER, the fantasy games are by default stored in the fantasy directory.

Tobyr -
I have Win98, and whenever i go to save a game, it always opens the respective directory to save it into. For laoding games i have to choose the directory.

Sand Monkey,
Thanks for correcting me. That's how win 98 works for me also. I should have said:
In win 2000, the game remembers the LOAD directory, even the forst time you go to load the save file you stored testerday, before exiting the program.
