Explain me this - multi maps. Remove this text

Is it 256 cities per MAP or for ALL maps?

And is the unit limit per MAP or for ALL maps too?

Enter the AD-FREE zone

There is a limit of 256 cities total. Not 256 for each map, but 256 for all the maps added together.

No, 256 cities are allowed, it's just that one player can only have 255, since 1 has to be enemy.

Well, I think it's 255. But we shall not quarel for such a petty matter.
The AI don't need any city to exist. You can create a map where all others civ star on a little island of ice. They'll never build any city, so you can have all of them. 255 that is.

I've never played it but I would vote for 255. That would be a binary 11111111. If it allows 256, why wouldn't it allow another 3839? Or would that be 3840?

Thanks Kcbob. We could make a good team. I know the answer because I've tested it. And you've got the theorical explanation. It's an unbeatable combination !
So I repeat it : it's 255 cities, not 256.

Dan, as I am quite an unbeliever, could you send me a saved game with 256 cities, so that I can see by myself. I have both ToT and MGE.

Me too please!
This is really strange, looking at scn/sav structure i discovered that in unit section a byte contains an index to the supporting cities BUT a value (FF) means "NONE"; this suggests that all values a byte can take less one are avaible as city index (and so 256-1=255)
I'm really interested in discovering which city is the 256-th and which index number the game gave to its military units.

I sent it the day you actually posted that, but before I read this complaint. And with no reply, I suggest that either:

1. You're too embarassed to say that you've been proven wrong

2. You're dead

3. Your email is screwed up and I accidentially sent the file to a 400-pound Russian prostitute called Doris.

No Dan, I'm not dead yet. And before you call me Doris, maybe that you should try to send me a second time your file. Try this adresses and request a return receipt :
julius.brenzaida@infomaniak.ch
juliusbrenzaida@hotmail.com
Thanks in advance.

As neither Angelo and neither Darth have manifested themselves we don't know if they have received your saved file, either. We need their opinions.
But let's just make on thing clear : did you read my signature ?
I would be glad, if it was 256 rather than 255, it's just that I won't believe it, before I've seen it.

Increase Your PM Length

Dan,
sorry for late but i was a bit busy,
I've received your mail but there was no attachment present! What about resend it?

I don't know if it was a joke or not but with the mail you didn't send me the sav file but you sent me a Javascript virus embedded with the mail (it's called kak virus and is badly programmed IMHO: it does no damage! ), so i suggest you and all other people who received mail from you to check computer for infection.

Angelo

For what it's worth, someone on the Civ2 strategy forum reported getting the "too many cities" message, and then added up all the cities on the map. Result: 255 cities. See this thread:

Thanks DaveV. I was, and I was not alone in this opinion, I was convinced that it was 255. Dan went to pretend it was 256, but he never sent me a .sav file to prove he was right. As I have no proof, I shall still rely on my own experiences, which have showed me it was 255.
