In addition to the original Civ2 game, TOT contains 3 others -- an extension of the original beyond the landing at AC, using a separate map for Alpha Centauri; a Science-Fiction version where the objective is to return to Earth, using 4 maps; and a Fantasy version, also using 4 maps. There is also a Midgaard scenario for the Fantasy version, which I believe is very similar to the FW scenario. The technology trees and units change, sometimes drastically, depending on the version you are playing. The overall game remains Civ, and the basic strategies are the same, but implementing them can become quite a challenge.

You might want to check out Apolyton's ToT sub-section also. There are lots of links to reviews of the game, however most miss perhaps the greatest feature, which is the broadening of the events macro language, that includes things such as; technology removal, flags-and-masks, and 'give city improvement / Wonder' events...

ToT does have the original game, but it also has about 2 completaly new games (not considered scenarios for some reason) an extended original game where, once your spaceship lands, you get to colonize alpha centuri ( somehting da smokes has always wanted to do) and 1 "scenario" (personally, da smokes calls it a scenario for lack of better word.
