I usually play only the original game, but decided to give the extended game a whirl. I started a game as a human race, got bored (seemed like the original but with a more drawn out endgame), then decided to play as the alien race. Since the manual is less-than-helpful on certain points, though, I have to ask:
1) I've read here that the alien spaceship doesn't land on earth, but lands back on AC. If that's true, is there any point in building a ship?
2) How do I get Ultrastring Theory? There are no prerequisites listed.
3) Once I build a transporter spot, can anything go through it, or only certain types of units? And can human units come through?
I think that's all for now. Any insights are richly appreciated.

Hey Rufus,
I played Extended Game a lot when I got ToT just because the Original was just CivII and I was **hoping** (snarl!) for something new when I bought it... anyway...
1) Yes, there is a point to building a ship. Even though the video and onscreen announcements say that you've landed on AC, your colonists are on Earth - able to build cities, etc.
2) To get Ultrastring Theory, you need to have landed your spaceship and, if I recall, the option to research it will appear the next time the research menu appears. IIRC, there's another tech which requires Fusion Power, and the only way to get that is to steal it from a human Civ since the Centaurans can't research Fusion themselves. I think that's right, there's a thread on this somewhere...
3) I think most modern units can use the transporter. In any event, if you look up the unit in the Civilopedia, in the top right of the screen it will say "Can(Can't) use transporter"
Enjoy...

Landed last night, and in fact youdo land on AC, not earth! But your colonists can build transporters, so you then get to earth on the next turn or two. Also, all my colonists (I had the maximum, 4) were placed so that they were over earth land, near human cities, which was a nice feature; the spies will start popping down and buying cities this evening!

Somebody (Kestrel ?) redid the events.txt so that alien spaceships did actually land colonists on earth itself instead of AC. Thread should be in this forum I think but was a while ago so you may have to search for it...
[Edit: Civ2-General has a MP thread titled "Invasion Planet Earth" doing the same thing in a succession game ... ]
