Multiplayer Compatablilty between mac/pc? Tired of ads?

I have never tried a multi-player game, but I will be soon, and one question keeps popping up. The manual says that all people playing must have the same verson of the game, but the version numbers for Mac MPG and PC MPG are totally different. Can you play mutliplayer over the internet agianst PC players with a Mac?

Yes.As long as you have the latest patch. There are some "tricks" that don't work on the MAC version but no compatibilty problems...

you will have technical problems from time to time but that has nothing to with MACs.

Put an end to popups!

Yeah, what Smash said! I guess what I REALLY need to do is write a FAQ for Mac-MPG! Or maybe someone (Smash) else (Smash) might want to take a crack at it (Smash)! The most important thing to do is go get ICQ and then add a bunch of Civ players to the list (see the ICQ lists on the Multiplayer Forum). That is the best way to find a game! Well, that and posting on the Multiplayer Forum.

Yeah, what Smash said, with a tad more detail. The glitches that will occur (not "might", but "definitely will") - players suddenly disappearing from the game (that is, losing their connection to the game), and the game jamming or freezing - are Civ software problems. Both the PC and MAC versions of Civ 2 Multiplayer are seriously flawed.

But thanks to Mr Nesse at MacSoft, the Mac version has been improved out of sight since its original release. I expect the PC version has also improved, but the Mac version was virtually unplayable in its original form.

Here's where you'll find the latest patch for our version:

Ummm...yeah, what I meant when I said ICQ was "I See you need the Patch first!" Really. Truly. THEN go get ICQ and conquer the world!

Thanks for your help . I already have the newest patch, and make a point of always having the newest patch, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Actually, I thought it was a final version as no further modifications were possible without losing PC compatiblity.

I don't know if it's final in terms of PC compatibility. Mr Nesse didn't mention anything about that. It's probably the last major release because he's gone onto other things. But he said he remains available to us.

Have any of you actually succeeded in playing a game of any reasonable length across platforms? Especially since using V1.1.1?

I'm a PC type, but have tried on numerous occasions to play with Mac friends. The experiments go back almost a year now. We used to be able to play, sort of - but the problems were much more severe than I experienced with PC-only players. Similarly, the Mac guys indicated the disconnects, etc. were much worse than they experienced when playing Mac-only games. Since they got V1.1.1 (yes, I'm using the latest PC version), we haven't been able to go more than a single turn without a critical crash.

We've basically given up - I'm currently of the opinion that cross-platform games are simply not feasible. But I was hoping someone may have been able to overcome similar obstacles...

I have no major problems.Berzerker is very active and also manages well with cross platform games.

While I've never actually finished a game(not in my mind anyway) I have gone to modern ages.

The only problem (aside from a less than satisfactory server - now gone ) was freezing during the AI, especially when barbs appeared on my games screen. That problem has virtually disappeared (no more freezing barbs) with the 1.1.1 patch.

Guess it might be worth trying again...

Do you find it any different if there is a Mac host vs. a PC host?

Or are there any practical limits on the number of participants?

Most recent experiments (which failed) had PC as host and more than two participants.

I just started seriously getting into MP, and haven't had any issues with cross-platform games...in fact I don't think I've played a game with anyone who has used a Mac

A lot of the problems I've seen with TCP/IP cross-platform games comes from outdated software...Open Transport and things like that.

Another thing you might want to look at is your extension set. I've got almost all non-essential extensions turned off, and I know that helped in ending the "Error Type 12" errors I got the first couple times I hooked up.

thats a good point(maybe).PCs do seem subject to extension conflicts with some games more than MACs.Finding which one is a bit of a pain though.

I'm having next to no problems playing with PCers. There are the usual episodes of people being booted, but that seems not to be platform-related. In fact, about the only other Mac player I play with seems to be Bez. And the freezing on the barb/AI turn seems to have lightened off too. Doesn't stop me holding my breath every time the buggers have their turn though.

Occasionally I have episodes of being unable to connect to a game. It happened one day in a diplo game which I'd never had any problem joining before. For some reason, I couldn't get past the Waiting For Others To Join dialogue box. Eventually, for the sake of the others, I had to find a sub to play that session for me. Next session, I was in without a problem. Who knows?

I do a lot of hosting and I haven't found any differences between hosting and not hosting.

Equally, the number of players doesn't seem to matter, providing everyone's patched up. Statistically, I suppose, the more players you have, the more room there is for a problem.
