I am disappointed, to say the least..... Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

Firaxis has been disappointing me a lot lately.
First of all there was Alpha Centauri-it just wasn't as good as Civilization. What I would really have liked was a Civilization III with better rules and more realism, and perhaps being able to colonize the solar system. Maybe I didn't like it because I couldn't relate to Alpha Centauri. The tech names meant nothing to me.
Then came Antietam. The thing I liked most about Gettysburg was "Fighting the Battle" You would play each of the scenarios, and how well you did on each scenario effected the next one. It seems like Firaxis got too lazy to figure out the effects of the different scenarios and just lumped them into one big one which you cannot keep track of.
And now this. A game which would completely suck as turn based, and probably a Warcraft clone if real time. I can't see much strategy involved either....Dinosaurs also has the problem that noone can relate to it. Just as noone has ever lived on Alpha Centauri, noone has ever been a dinosaur.

amazing argument, but true
still there are plenty of SF enthusiasts out there. not sure about dino fans though...

on my big questions is how can you have a civ game with dinosaurs? in civ, you're supposed to be the leader of a tribe. what are you in dino? the leading t-rex?
obviously firaxis has lot of questions to answer...

Why would you imagine this is a Civ game? I.e., because of their marketing tool -- the trilogy thing? I would not expect Sid Meier to go to such trouble just to re-do the Civ genre with Dinosaurs. Had I their ear, I would ask a better question. That is, if I could only think of one.

Btw, not having any real information, it seems like sometimes we project our own ideas of what we think the game will be. Typically, this means imagining it to be something we know, e.g., Warcraft, etc. Then, finding that wanting, we of course become skeptical. Which is fine. But let's disclose what we're being skeptical about -- our own vision. Not what actually is on the drawing board at Firaxis.

Yeah, I guess Alpha Centauri is a lot more appealing now with the Alien Crossfire addon-I really want to get that.
Hopefully not having the same factions everytime will improve gameplay.
Anyways, the Firaxis guys can't be that much more creative than us -what do you think they game will be like?
I have a hard time visualizing how what you do in dinosaurs will effect what you do in Civ III and Alpha Centauri, let alone how you would progress from one game to another.

Spartan- I can't see why you wouldn't like SMAC for the story. The tech names were for the most part great and very interesting, and you learned a lot of interesting ideas about science if you played the game. The story and setting was great.

If you must pick a flaw with SMAC, it's GOTTA be that the AI was moronic and felt like Civ2 all over again. Which is why I really didn't play it that much.

I agree with Snowfire. Even playing on Transcend became no challenge to me.

But Sid should wake up to something. Why do people still play CivII even to this day? Scenarios. Scenarios could work for CivIII. Not for Dinos. So it'll be the usual Play it-Like it-Beat it-Master it - Get bored with it routine.

Careful on your statement, BD, i do not play scenarios, nor do they interest me in the least bit. I've tried a few, and found them to be sorely lacking compared to the actual game.

On the dino's game. . im not THAT interested in dinos actually, i was as a kid, but the interest in dinos seems very juvinille to me now. . anyhow, perhaps they can make a good game of it, we'll see. Though im throughly confused as to how it will relate to civIII or SMAC at all. . . this whole sweep of time thing, while its a great idea, doesn't seem to be working out too good at all the way its being done. civIII im looking forward to, but thats it. . .

Female game players would love that because females were the larger gender among T-Rexes.:-)

I say wait and see. After all if Railroad Tycoon had never existed and Sid announced that he was making a "train management game", most people would think he was crazy.

There is no reason why dinos can't make a good game.

Connorkimbro, guess you don't like my lil statement there. Don't for one second think that just because you are a "civer", means people should hold what you said as the bible. Maybe you should graduate, wait for a few years, live in the real world for a while. Before you go around running your mouth, junior. That seniority bullcrap of yours makes me wanna throw-up. Just because your spewed your mouth 1400+ times on this forum, doesn't mean you have any value as a poster. I'm not disregarding what your have to say. You may be a long-time civer, maybe even "respected". But it is your attitude toward newbies that repulses me. I certainly didn't mean to start anything by posting. But if you wanna flame. Then you better bring a lil more than that seniority crap as your ammo.

P.S. Kathleen, girlfriend or someone your stalking when your not here adding another post to your stats.

But connor, I have no choice but to say it's very lame to call someone an ass just because they have been posting only a few times.

He also registered Nov 1st, gawd, it only took me a month to learn who was who and what was what in the forums. No, far less than that.

Oh, and I don't play Civ2 anymore, I try to though, see if I can get the "old" feelin' back, but as soon as I get to 1AD or around it, I go "ahh bugger it!" and close it, cause I know I will win and I'll know how I will win. And scenarios bore the hell out of me. I don't like optical illusions to make me think differently.

As far as Railroad Tycoon, they did go nuts. It's call RailRoad Tycoon II - can you say bomb!

CIV III - I'll have to see it first. This Dino ? game, I know nothing about it. Any screen shots anywhere - I'm too lazy to look myself.

RenderDrone: I stand corrected, but perhaps i have been a BIT misunderstood. I was not trying to be "high and mighty," nor was i trying to use seniority or a 1400 post count to say I knew what i was talking about. However, one or two of YOUR comments seemed to me to be quite insulting, not necessarily to me, thought they could have been, i'm not sure. So, my post, while a bit of a flame where it shouldn't have been, was more directed to THAT attitude, not the fact that you're a junior civer. Take note of what i said to Vanguard who was also a junior. He said something reasonable, while it seems as you didn't, that's why i responded differently.

Let's be real, if it wasn't Sid doing this game we'd all be off doing something else.
Is anyone excited about dino's.
I agree with Loki, after a while civ2 gets old. Perhaps that's why i have 50 plus games.
Let's see if we are truly representative of the market place and this game dies early.

IMNSHO, this game may be one of the biggest flops in the history of computing unless Sid and inject some originality into it. The idea of starting with 1 or a few weak units and building them up into a huge empire has been done countless times.

Seeing as the Titles have been changed, RD's and what's-his-name arguing over the old titles is funny.

I EXPECT the Sid Dino game to be RTS... because they already did DinoCiv. It was Fantastic Worlds, and one scenario I enjoyed.

I do take issue that people play scenarios ALOT in Civ. None of the Firaxis, Hasbro, or Microprose polls, and none of the GAME related sites polls, back that. The STRONGEST contigent that responded was 11% said they played scenarios, and only 2% said it was important to be able to DESIGN scenarios. Aside from a few scenarios on Fantastic World disc, I never played scenarios. Tried a couple. And found them absolutely BORING.

Civ2 on my system has been replaced with ToT. I enjoy the Science Fiction worlds, with it's killer doughnuts. That's me. My girlfriend loves the Fantasy world. That's her. Some people don't like any of them, I bet. Just a shiny new coat (Mod set) on Civ2, after all. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

If SID designs the game, it will be a good game. I don't think there will be a HIGH carry-over of the Civvers to it though. Why? I expect it to be RTS. While there ARE cross-overs, they aren't a large majority, are they? We like what we like. Personally, I don't have the reflexes after 23+ years of heavy computer and game playing for anything requiring serious reflexes to enjoy the full depth of the tactics in RTS games. That means RTS are mostly simple click fest that I can't appreciate. Oh well. TBS games let me think and go at my own pace, allowing ME to enjoy them fully. But not everyone has my problems.

DinoCraft should be a good hit. And as a RTS game, it should have good MP play. And it shouldn't take long to reach the market. They have a good RTS engine in the Getty/Ant thing, right?

You want to whine over it not being the SF Galaxy Conquest that we were sometimes lead to believe, fine. I'd like a good TBS Galatic Conquest. You want to complain that it won't be to your taste, fine. But don't go dissing the Sid Man. There will be PLENTY of people buying that game when it hits the shelf. Some, because it's Sid. And many, cause it's Dinos. And I bet enough of them will like it enough to drown us old timers playing SERIOUS games in their posting of their happiness with it, and threatening to kick your butt. (not to mention the "me too"s.)

Sid makes good games. And his newest will be a good one. Even if it's not to OUR taste...
