Shall we give them a helping hand with the name? Suffering from ads?

I can't think of any right now, but I think just "Dinosaurs" is a little too simple for what the game will actualy be.

SMART sounds good ... but one little problem... Dinos were not reptiles, they were Dinosauria

opps.. my bad, got thinking about this and looked it up, I thought dinos had made it up to thier own class, but they appear to still be two orders under the class Reptilia, GgGgRrRrr teach me to type before I think.

So where did Dinosauria come from? is that an old group name? Taxonomy is starting to hurt my head

They almost did according to any recent decent book. They are two of the five orders of Archosauria (I might misspell a couple of terms because I was interested in this many years ago).:-)

Thanks for the sub-class name St. Leo.
went and looked up the five orders under sub-class Archosauria and was somewhat surprised the the 'flyers' are order Pterosauria and apparently are not considered dinosaurs in the technical sense. Learn something new everyday.

Actually I have had a hard time finding a good exact definintion of what exactly is a dinosaur, best I could come up with was basically animals of the orders, Saurischia and Ornithischia, anyone find a better one?

Ok, dinos are 2 of the 5 Archosaurs groups:
Thecodonts
Crocodiles
Pterosaurs
and the 2 Dinos groups:
Saurischia and Ornithischia

The first definition of a dino has been made in 1841 by Richard Owen, but it is not entirely true. Still, it is one of the best(and shortest) definition of a general dinosaur. PLEASE, don't read it if you don't know your anatomy well :

This group[Dinosauria] is characterized by a large sacrum composed of 5 anchylosed vertebrea of unusual construction, by the height and breadth and outward sculpturing of the neural arch of the dorsal vertebrea, by the twofold articulation of the ribs to the vertebrea, viz. at the anterior part of the spine by a head and tubercle, and along the rest of the trunk by a tubercle attached to the traverse process only; by broad and sometimes complicated coracoids and long and slender clavicles, whereby Crocodillian characters of the vertebral column are combined with a Lacertilian type of pectoral arch; the dental organs also exhibit the same transitional or annectent characters in a greater or less degree. The bones of the extremities are of large proportional size, for Saurians; they are provided with large medullary cavities, and with well-developed and unusual processes, and are terminated by metacarpal, metatarsal and phalangeal bones, which, with the exception of the ungual phalanges, more or less resemble those of the heavy pchydermal Mammals, and attest, with the hollow long-bones, the terestrial habits of the Species.(Richard Owen, Report on British Fossil Reptiles, pages 102-103)

To this he gave the name of Dinausoria.
As you can see, it is really precise and hard to understand If you did uunderstand, congrats, I wasn't able myself, hehe. But, this description is flawed :
The sacrum is common among dinosaurs but not always of this particular number. Clavivles are not characteristic among these reptiles.
Dinosaurs show great variety in the dentition. All of the dinosaurs were terrestrial reptiles, although some of them were of amphibious habits. Finally, not all dinosaurs were ofgreat size, and do not represent 'a distinct tribe' as Owen wrote in his book, but rather 2 very distinct reptilian orders. These 2 are distinc mostly because of their Pelvis and Skull(teeth).

Hope that helped

Thanks Karhgath

Luckily I still remember enough biology, paleoentogy and have the ability to not run in fear of scientific writing that it only took 15 minutes and two dictonaries to get the main jist of his definition and from what I could make of it and with your comments, it does sound horribly outdated.

'Dinosaur' and 'Dinosauria' seem like words everyone uses but no one knows exactly what they mean. It is words like these that can lead to extended arguements only to discover the problem was a short-comming communication

Thanks agian

A little further web-surfing since I don't have the appropriate books here..

If you are into cladistic taxonomy (something that was only mentioned in passing in all those historical geology courses):

clade - a grouping of organisms that includes an ancestor and all of its descendents.

Holtz and Padian (1995) define Dinosauria as the most recent common ancestor of Triceratops and modern birds, and all its descendants.

These guys certianly are on the side that Aves evolved from a Dino lineage, hmmm.. what is the major sticking point for this agian (other then convention) something to do with which digit on the foot is vestigial?
