Has anyone ever been successful in freeing slaves with an abolitionist? Is there anything that affects the chances for success?

I haven't had an attempt fail, that I can recall, out of about 2 dozen or so. My Abolitionist units have been attacked by the AI when spotted, but they haven't failed in a 'Free Slave' attack.
The AI will probably declare war over it, btw.
