Starting in another age Get a bigger avatar today!

I haven't played ctp2, isn't available yet here, but I just had an idea i wanted to share. Well here it is!!!

Wouldn't it be nice if you could start your game in a different age like the modern age, you would already have some cities and explored part of the map. At the start of the game you would have to choose which direction you want to research, and when you play you already have some advances of the previous age but not all so the different players have different abilities.
Maybe if you choose a paeceful research direction you could have an alliance another paeceful (computer)player. Of course you would also need units, not much, at least one per city so you're not completely defenseless, if you researched more aggressive you will probably have more units. City improvements would also be different per civilization, a peaceful researcher would have more improvements becuase he doesn't invest much in units, so the people would be happier, he would probably earn more gold, but he will also be conquered much easier.

That's it, hope you like it

Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

CTP II already comes with three different scenarios that start in different ages and you can also create your own scenarios.

Support Apolyton, buy Alpha Centauri

The problem with a scenario (as I understand it) is that you will be stuck with lots of fixed items, like the map. It could be nice to quick start at 1 AD with a random map, selectable number of players, 20-25 settlers, 10,000 PW and 80% of all the "ancient" advances, for example. Now if a scenario can handle that sort of combination of random and customisable elements when launched, I am impressed.

Suffering from ads?

Grumold, just create a map of your own and while creating your scenario, set the date and public works to what you want it to be.

Then there are text files (don't remember which), where you can change the number of civilizations beyond eight.

Increase Your PM Length

If I create the map, it won't be random and unknown to me, presumably? I assume the same would be the case for the techs , I.e. I would have to explicitly set the techs discovered rather than allowing each nation to differ within a set # of research points?

Tired of ads?

This is a little off topic but does anyone know how I can stop a game at a certain age? I'd like to make a map of some small region of the earth, put in appropriate civilisations, and then just play one time period until we all make peace or one of us wipes the others out. If there is a switch in the .txt files for starting and stopping ages do I have to mess with tech tree files or will the game automatically know not to give advances?

You can start and end in the ages of your choice. Just start a multiplayer/LAN game with yourself and however many AI civs you wish to battle. It plays just like single player. You can also omit any units you want.

Enter the AD-FREE zone

Thanks for the tip. I tried it out and changed starting and ending ages to 'Ancient' but I couldn't launch the game. I chose LAN and I picked three other civs to play with but when I clicked 'launch' nothing happened. It just gave the error sound. Any ideas?
