I posted this in the suggestion area, but wanted to get a more general opinion. What do you think about having the ability to LOAN your excess treasury? Sure you can give it away - for goodwill etc, but what about loaning gold and then getting it back in a few turns with extra gold (interest)? Think how ticked you'd be if a civ reneged on payment. Send in the troops! In MP, you can make side agreements for repayment, but I'm talking about making it a more formal part of the game. There are economic sim games (Capitalism Plus, Railroad Tycoon) that incorporate capital markets as a strategic element of gameplay - but of course we don't need a stock market model - a basic civ to civ lending model (maybe with a changing global interest rate to spice things up some more) would suffice. Historically, the part that the Medici's, Rothschild's, Morgan's and the Marshall Plan played in helping nations and financing wars was tantamount in the overall "call to power" structure of the world. Any thoughts?

That was used in Alpha Centauri, if I am not mistaken.
Basically, when you made a loan, you would agree to how much you would be paid back each turn over how many turns. The Computer or you would then agree, and if so then the cash would be automatically withdrawn. Of course, you would gain some substantial interest. This really should be in the game, to allow for economic control.

I'm going to dust off the SMAC that I bought from the bargain bin and hardly played to see if it's in there.
