Yeah i found this out trying to prove something on a different message board....
Also, I believe that you cannot disband your only city. It just keeps pumping out settlers.

Does the one city keep giving you 'disband settler? or city? messages? And then just crank out a new settler without disbanding the city?

No, there is no message asking if you want to disband the city or build the settler. It just builds the settler, as if it were a size 2 and dropping to a size one. Of course we normally are not building settlers that early that our only city is a size one, but it's a good thing to know incase the need arises.

Do you loose any food in the food box?
That can be a very interesting startegy for early growth if your capitol is producing a lot of shields you can pop settlers before it grows to size 2.

Just tried it in single player with MGE (UK version), worked like a charm.
I didn't know, thanks!

This is an old trick which is very useful if you stumble into a lot of gold early or if you run into a civ that will pay you early tribute.
ICSers depend on it.

This only works when you have 1 city. As soon as you have a 2nd city the capitol will be disbanded if still size 1 when building a new settler.
I guess the only use to this is in a non deity game when you have an iron or gold next to your capitol. You can then build your 1st settler even if your capitol is still size 1.

I don't like it when I get 2 or 3 hut units assigned to my size 1 city, killing its production. Disband one or two in the city towards a rushed settler to use for your 2nd city and save your NONE settler.

I usually try and keep that NON settler around as long as possible, it can come in handy sometimes.
I just thought of another use for this...
when you launch a spaceship and you're capitol gets taken the ship comes back. But what if you disband your capitol, thus meaning you have no capitol? Of course, the bi-products of this are crippling corruption/waste and low cost cities, but it's just a thought.

Yup, you can destroy your capital and be immune from spaceship loss unless your entire civ is destroyed. It happens to the AI on occasion. Corruption and waste generally would not be a problem since you would undoubtably be in Fundy, Dem or Com, which don't suffer from corruption.

Well, i was thinking that you would do it early in the game, but i guess if you do it at the end of the game... so long as you put nothing of value in the city (i.e. wonders and such).
