Website (design) Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations: Deluxe Edition

While the 'web-site' topic is not about the site currently, I post this new one.

About the website: I think the content is at a very descent level. The meetings for example are a real good things on the site. Everybody can see what was discussed when there was a meeting.

About the design: I think a lot can be done here; and it has to be. The current design is not very professional looking at my opinion. While i'm a webdesigner myself I already contacted heardie about it. If ANY other webdesigners have an opinion about it, please post it here.

At last: I know that the website isn't the most important thing in this project, but a representive site is always a beginning to attract civ-gamers and encourage them to anticipate.

Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

I agree an attractive site is important. Content is the most important thing in our project, but since that matter is well under control now, it is good if you web gurus can discuss to make the site look better. Personally, I don't have very strong opinions about what it should look like, just that good looks must not prevent the user from getting to the information. I'm willing to accept any good-looking, functionally organized site. Thanks for your help already in advance, and also you others who will help with this.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

As the web is the very foundation for this project we need a good looking web site. But like Amjayee I don't really know how it should look.

An important thing here is to have a forum link that takes you directly to this forum at Apolyton. We should not ever make our own forum, as it is much better to keep all the debate at one place. And Apolyton is the perfect place for that.

BTW: could it be possible for us to have our own forum here at Apolyton? We already take up all the debate here at the alt.civs forum, so why not just rename it to OpenCiv3 forum, and then possibly make a new alt.civs one? Our forum should remain open and available, and not hidden such as the Clash forum is.

I already contacted DanQ about getting an own forum, but no reply yet. We would need our own forum, but it should be here, as you said.

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

It doesn't REALLY matter where the forum is, but I agree that it is currently one of the most important aspects of the project, while OpenCiv3 is open for everybody around the world and this is probably the best way to communicate at such big scale (well, let's say: expanding).

I'll see if I can design something in the next week.

Well, here i am again already. Has made something to start with. Visit http://www.pekok.demon.nl/openciv3/ and you'll see. Let me know if you all like it.

And since it's open source: the (main) image file is downloadable at http://www.pekok.demon.nl/openciv3/oc.psd (a Adobe Photoshop 5.5 file).

Tired of ads?

It looks really great! Great job.

A few things:

- I would change the colours of the site. The current ones are not very pretty...

- Have the Forum link take you directly to the alternative civs forum in stead of just to the list of forums.

- We should propably settle for one name, and then use that all the time. Using the names OpenCiv, Open Source Civilization and OpenCiv3 all at the same time would create too much insecurity on what our name really is. I think that we should always use OpenCiv3.

- I don't think the poll is needed. Would we change the game structure, if we found out that the majority of people wanted great 3D graphics as their first choise? I think not. In stead we should allow people to decribe what they want using the forum.

Apart from these small details I really like the website. I hope you two can get something going!

I don't have anything special to add. The colors perhaps could be fine-tuned, but the overall structure of the page is great. I agree that the poll is not necessarily needed, the forum should perhaps be the main place for opinions.

Thanks for the reactions.
1. The colors are pretty difficult to choose. I choose these colors to create not an too busy page and also because it's an quiet natural and historical color (if you can speak of that). Which colors are you thinking of? More bright maybe, or just other styles (red or blue or even different)?

2. The content was just copied from the current page (as you have seen) so that's why there is still (the same) poll and the same topics. So the content is not 'updated' yet and I don't think we need a poll anymore either. Escpacially the current one is too outdated ofcourse! Also, the topics are open for discussion as I already saw in the old 'web-site' topic.

3. The links on this test page are not intented to be real links. While I was making the page I didn't knew the forum adress by hard (did your?? don't think so) so this was just that it was a link, not pretending to link to a real page (currently). As you may noticed the topics aren't link yet too.

4. It IS quiet hard to make a website (design) with 2 people at the other site of the world (however I don't know where tou live heardie..), but this shouldn't be a big problem while I was not pretending to take over the website control! Only making design, updating tweaking and such things. I think we can work that out very well.

5. (And last) The name of our project. As said in the introducing text on our site, the name is just a project name and so I don't know if the ending name is already a question. However, I also do feel we need 1 peroject name. I vote for OpenCiv then, while I don't remember of making a OpenCiv1 and 2... And we are not Civilization 3 right? I thought we wanted to create our own game and not a clone. Well, then if even the name is a clone...

That's it. Sorry for your time. :-)

Suffering from ads?

Elmo:

Sorry for your time. :-)

??????

Don't say that! And more important: Don't think that! Of cause you shouldn't be sorry for taking our time. It is great that you are willing to invest your time in this project, and we are grateful for that.

To the replies:

1: I am not sure, actually. I think the current ones may be a bit too... I don't know really. I just feel that they could be prettier.

2: When I mentioned those things I was simply commenting on our webpage in general. Therefor some of Heardie's work is included too.

3: No problem!

4: Well, I hope you can manage it! It is great to get some help from a real webdesigner.

5: I also feel that OpenCiv is propably the best name of those. Unfortunately there is already a civ project called OpenCiv. It is a civ-clone like FreeCiv, although I don't really know much about it. Apart from this there is the fact that we are currently known as OpenCiv3. The reason for the 3 is, that we should be the open source version of what Civ3 was supposed to be, if it was up to us. I would like us to get a real name, like Clash and Manifest Destiny has. The problem here is finding one.

OK then. But we can use OpenCiv3 as the project (beta) name and think about that later. Let's all use OpenCiv3 then. OK?

Openciv3 is the official project name. We will come up with the actual name when we reach alpha, or at least at beta stage.

About the colors, they are not bad. Just like with Joker, I just have a feeling they could be better. But they are perfectly ok even now, of course. Thanks for _your_ time, you have done well this far!

Elmo:

Yes. OpenCiv3 will be the current name. But if you have any ideas for a better one please post them. We could really use a cool name.

the website colours:
I think it might work better with some colours that had a bit more "fresh" appearence. But I don't really know what colours works best on a website...

Could you try to find some good ones?

OK. That means OpenCiv3 is currently the project name and so the 'logo' has changed to that. Also the topics are changed a little bit and the column structure is edited so it has a bit different feeling. :-)

See http://www.pekok.demon.nl/openciv3/ for the changes. About the colors: I'll experiment some with that. Maybe some visiting to other 'civ-like' project do some good.
