I think it's self explanatory...
What is this of the game?

It is a project, where we are trying to create a civ type game. The project is completely open source and will be free to play. This means that anyone, who has interest in helping us out, no matter how much or how little they want to do, is more than welcome to do so.
The project started back in March in the Civ3 suggestions forum. The first months were mostly a planning phase, where we decided what it was we wanted to do. But now we are really starting to get some work done.
As you may have seen by reading some of the threads here we are taking a radically new approach to civ gaming. We will be anything but a clone. In stead, we will have a completely new and original population model, where each civ has a real province, as oppose to civs heads.
One of our main goals is, that playing the game should be less moving units and heads around on the map (this is apart of the game, too, we will just reduce the time needed to spend on it) and more strategy. We will not only give the people a mind of it's own, and have social classes play an important role in the game, we will also make the diplomatic options towards foreign civs much more advanced than in Civ2.
But this is still early in the life of GGS. Much needs to be done, and a person joining now will still be able to have a large influence over the actual development of the game. Of cause influence is directly proportional to time spent on the project.
In other words, we want people. Everybody are welcome. Both designers with fresh views on civ gaming and C++ programmers as well as artists are needed. To join just post a suggestion or comment in our forums. You don't really have to sign up anywhere, since most of the development takes place right here at Apolyton.

An idea:
Cross Panzer General (for combat) and Civ (for micro/macro control)

Hmm...
I haven't really played Panzer General.
But we are deliberately not trying to make this a wargame. We wont have a tactical battlemode, and we are trying to give the player more modes for succes, other than just combat. Generally we want to make it a game where you have to think to succeed, not just pump out troops.

You see, the tactical combat of Panzer General is the best so far in terms of "fairness"... Although, I agree that it should not be the only mode, it is a mode.

Excellent idea with a column!
We should propably also get ourselves a "page about" in the alternative civs section.
