The Burgundy-Question Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

Ok, I just spend almost an hour thinking about the move Mun-Bur. To risk or not to risk, that´s the question.

I need advice! Here is the situation as I see it in my game, S01 moves are due tuesday:

France has offered an alliance from the very beginning. I agreed and asked if he would commit himself against England by moving Bre - Eng. However he said he rather wanted to open neutrally, to MAO, Pic and Spa. That sounded genuine enough.
I offered him an agreed bounce in Bur, but he declined again, saying he´d rather open to Bel, hoping for a build there if I would agree. Wich I did.

England seems very friendly. We have an alliance and I trust him. In the beginning he wanted to open to the north (NWG, NTH, Yor) but after I talked a bit and also offered him Bel, he changed that to an opening to ENG, NTH, Wal. I do believe he is not lying.

Russia btw seems friendly enough and will have a very tough time in the south. He is no threat, I believe.
Italy is believed to go eastwards.

Now, I do not entirely trust the french. From england I know that he is talking about an anglo-french entente. (on the other hand, I would be surprised if he did not talk to E like that)

The question now is: shall I go to Bur.

The pro:
-If France moves as promised, he is totally screwed, provided england is my real ally.
-If France tries to stab me (Mar-Bur, Par-Pic) I stop him in his tracks, again provided England is on my side.

The contra:
- If France is still undecided about his alliances and England sees me as his enemy, I would send France directly in his arms.
- if I bounce in Bur, I have no say in Bel.
- I cannot support my move Kie-Hol in fall, should that become necessary (and England will realize this as well)

What do you think?

Sahib, Go with your instinct. If you don't trust the French player, then go with your instinct. Most people don't like to lie to people on their first turn. England puts a lot on the line by lying to you with nothing at stake for him. I think it would be really stupid for him to risk lying to you.

One other thing, the English Player is English. The English hate the French. I suspect an Enlgishman playing England will be thrilled to nail France.

Germany is screwed if England and France are against you anyway. I say massage the England relationship and get him committed to it. Good luck!

hmmm hmmmm
Well I kind of like sending the fleet to Den, and you can't do it with this opening. But you say Russia doesn't look like much of a threat so that's not so necessary...
And if France decides to more for Bur, then a bounce there isn't such a bad thing...
I say, take a risk and give it a shot. A F Eng and A Bur would be just an amazing sight

Ooops, why? What did I miss?

F Kie - Den
A Ber - Kie
A Mun - Ruh

I can take Hol with A Kie in fall. The risk is that the english can stand me out. But here I would agree with Ruff, I think I´ll go with my instinct. Wich tells me, England is on my side. Thanks guys!

Well it's POSSIBLE to send the fleet to den, but I wouldn't think you'd rather have a unit on bel in the fall if you're stabbing france...

If you REALLY do not know, then make a neutral opening. Well, in reality, there's no such thing as a neutral opening, but right now it does seem like your instinct is anti-French, so you may want to lean into that. I have to agree with Ruff - go with your instinct.

I just recieved this mail from France:
______________________________________
Dear Sascha;
There many rumors about an EGR alliance, and it is making me nervous. As I said before my intention is to ally with you, we have better chances to grow them a EF alliance, and I hope you fell the same. But for now I must use a more defensive stance and go back to the Bur bounce you suggest before. I hope it won´t cause you problems. Please change your move.
I will write again soon;
Fabio
France
______________________________________

What do you make of it?
My reply was this:

Dear Fabio,

first, there is no ERG. There never was. I will forward you a russian letter
I recieved yesterday, wich should prove that to you.

Second, infact I was a little worried myself. I guess you have a lot of
work and cannot answer more often, but nonetheless, I feel nervous when
I do not hear from my ally for a while.

Now should we go back to a bounce
in Bur? That depends. I have already send my orders in, marked "final".
They include Mun-Ruh. I will now send a second set and I hope/guess that
it is recieved in time for our GM to change it.

More important: what exactly do you mean by: defensive stance? I can live
with the bounce if you move Par-Bur, like I proposed earlier. But if you
are thinking about:

Mar-Bur
Par-Pic,

then we have a problem. A serious problem, since this opening would be outright
anti-german. I hope you did not mean this. Let me be very frank with you:
If you move two armies in my direction, I will very likely view that as
a declaration of war. Please do not do this.

I thought, we had a good alliance going, now what has happened? Who is trying
to get us apart? England most likely. He is of course trying to ally with
me, it would be his best alliance. And Russia? I told my russian colleague
a couple of times that I do not see ERG working. (Of course I did not say:
I don´t want ERG, after all, it was Russia´s proposal. )

But if you think about it, why in the world should Germany or England agree
to an ERG? It would only serve Russias interest! For both E and G, the best
would be if the other fights with Russia over scandinavia. So why should
we seek that three-party alliance? No, neither G nor E will go for ERG,
ask your teammates, they´ll agree.

And if you feared an EG alliance, fear not. I have outlined a couple of
times, why I prefer FG. And even if you did not believe me there, what would
you have gained by attacking me? You´d only open your back to Italy and
you would likely get only one build. Why risk that?

Ok, I change my orders to the bounce now. But you think again, we would
be better of with an direct attack on England. Tell me what you think. And
please give me reason to believe you´ll not attack me.

So long, I hope our alliance can overcome this little crisis,
cheers from
Germany, and please answer fast, the deadline is approaching!

Sahib aka Sascha
