Yes, it is Philip IV... I got it from a Velázquez painting, he's with his dog too, like Charles III in the Goya painting.

Too, I have thought that he is Charles III, as the painting where he is wearing black clothes and hunting with a dog.

The idea of a "Horrors Gallery" sounds very cool,in fact you have a special file with famous people, haven´t you?

I would add my Charles I and Olivares units but everybody know them

Well, I used to have a file with Alexander, Caesar, El Cid and Pizarro, but I took it out when I implemented the new design...

Now I think we could join our efforts to make a Spanish Rulers graphic file, of course there would be a very complete "gallery of horrors".

Fiera, that is entirely correct!!! I found that picture in the chronicle of Germany in an article about Charles V.

(BTW, I like Philipp he is an interesting personality, but he is not very popular in our protestant point of view because he has a reputation of being merciless)

Right, a very interesting personality indeed. The reputation of being merciless was invented for those who, as it is understandable, feared him: English, French, German protestants... I think it's very difficult for us today to imagine how mighty Philip II really was.

He was the most powerful man of his century, something like Clinton or Bush today, but without Senate and democracy...

I could see it by just clicking on the url. He looks like Alfonso XII, king of Spain but I suspect it is a German prince.

About Philip II, three main reason moved him to declare war on the English (listed in order of importance):
1) The assassination of Mary, Queen of Scots
2) English piracy in the Atlantic sea
3) English help to the Rebel Dutchies!

Despite all what has been said and exaggerated about the Armada, Philip II never bothered too much about the English; at that time they were pretty much like a dragonfly in front of an elephant. Philip II's worries were always France and Turkey. Of course, only a few years after Philip II, the dragonfly became a dragon flying well above the elephant.

Not wrong... it is supposed to be Leopold von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, who was pretendant to the Spanish throne in 1870. Notre amis francaise did not like that. It was a very messy story and it ended with the unification of Germany
