The French fleet that has caused so much havoc near Ireland seems to have disappeared into thin air.

Bit of an anti-climax so far.

1673 Piter Devries, historian of the court of the Stadholder, will now record another year of our nation's history.

To increse the prosperity and size of our new world holdings, Ft Orange has constructed a Corn Store, and soon our harvests will be richer.
Back home, Amsterdam has constructed a City Watch, to better keep order when our troops are on campaign.

The really important news is that Holland has founded a new colony south west of africa we have named Zuidersdorf.

Our domains continue to grow.

Nothing much to report this year. The merchants are active as usual, but frankly Emma and I would rather play cards with the King than get involved with such sordid stuff.

I hope His Majesty will give me a command in our war with the French. Not that I have anything against the French - but a man must make his mark somehow!

Negotiations have been undertaken whit the English, and there is a temporal end of hostilities while the English Diplomats who arrived in Paris last year try to negotiate a deal whit my diplomats.

New trade routes whit the netherlands are prospering as a cargo of Tobbaco arrived in Nijmegen last month.

Otherwise all is well (and perhaps we will soon be at peace whit our English neighbors...)

Dearest Clarissa,

Emma seems to have gone out on another one of her “hunting expeditions” – hunting anything in trousers I’ll wager - so I’m taking the chance to pen you a quick note. You wanted the latest gossip from the court. Very well:

My father’s old agents tell me that slaving expeditions in the land the Spanish call “Florida” have netted many native prisoners to work our mines in Jamaica.

Lord Halifax has sponsored a new colony in Nova Scotia, apparently, and sent many of his barbarous Irish tenants to settle there. Good riddance, I say!

Now that the war with the French has gone off the boil, rather, I expect I will have to find something else to do. I think the King expects me to lead the campaign to subdue those Scotch rogues. I suppose it will have to do. At least our army is in better shape than our so-called Senior Service, but I can’t say the simply atrocious weather – and worse food – up there appeals to me….

I supposed you wanted to hear of the latest fashions and scandal, but I’ll save the best bits until we rendevous next week in town.

Our American colonists are improving their trade and commerce at last, without relying so much on the mother country. More slaves are sold in the markets of Kingston every day, allowing work on the mines there to proceed apace.

The French Ambassador has suggested a formal ceasefire, to which we have agreed, but I have no idea whether King Louis will ratify his Minister’s decision. Maybe he will be swayed by the fine beaver pelts just delived to Le Havre by traders from Providence….

A giant breakthrough has been made by french scientists!
The French army are now being equiped whit a new kind of musketlock the flintlock is superior to the old wheel- and matchlocks in every way and along whit the introduction of the Bayonet the French army is once again going to be the dominant land force, just as the French army enjoys naval supremacy.
Lots of new trade convoys has been sent to the English Collonies as a new PEACE TREATY are discussed by the French and English leaders.
The treaty only awaits the signature of the English king.

Well, the King orders, and his faithful servant obeys. Scotland it is. I can at least report steady progress against the defences of Edinburgh. Our Artillery is causing frightful carnage within the city and it can only be a matter of time before the Scots ask for terms.

I hear the merchants are actively trading with the French across the Channel these days. Furs to Cherbourg is the latest thing, I understand. Oh well, at least the Frenchies’ backs will be warm when we blow their heads off! Ha!



I hear His Majesty (God Bless Him), is contemplating making peace with the frogs. Please, don’t let it be so! At least, until I have had a crack at them….
