Here is an excellent read, posted by Anthony on the alliances forum.
"Reading the threads started by Crazy Clown and redfield
asking why their alliances are being farmed by big alliances,
it's clear that a lot of these alliances being farmed don't
understand why they're being farmed. In both threads I and
others stated why they're being farmed and what they can
do to stop being farmed, but both Crazy Clown and redfield
basically ignored it. I'm not going to bother arguing with
either of them anymore on their threads since they
obviously are too stubborn or too stupid to understand what
they're doing wrong and how to fix it. So I'm posting here in
case some of the more intelligent leaders of farmed alliances
want to understand why they're in the situation that they're
in.
The main reasons alliances get farmed. Both are about equal
in importance, although I think #1 is more important for a
new alliance that's just starting out since it'll make it easiser
to do #2:
1) Pacts with the major alliances. This is pretty obvious. The
more pacts (NAPs, DNHs, etc.) you have with big alliances,
the fewer times you'll get landgrabbed. Only get NAPs/DNHs
with alliances that can actually hurt you by farming your
alliance. Don't get NAPs/DNHs with other new alliances or
other sucky or small alliances, since they're not the ones
who are going to be farming you (hell if your alliance is any
good, you should be farming them, and giving them
NAPs/DNHs just takes away all those nice potential landgrab
targets). Get NAPs/DNHs with the big bottomfeeders (ie.
MD, IX, SoF...). You know who they are - they're the ones
who are doing tons and tons of grabs on your alliance a day.
Now I know some idiot newbie alliance leader is going to
post "But we can't get pacts, the big alliances wont' give
them to us!" Let me emphasize this: GETTING PACTS SHOULD
NOT BE HARD. If getting pacts with major alliances is hard for
your leaders, it's because your leaders suck. For a new
alliance to succeed, you need to have well known leaders
who are friends with the leaders of the major alliances. Earth
is one of those old boys clubs. Most of the time, pacts are
determined by friendships and personal relations, especially
when it comes to major alliances giving new/small alliances
pacts. Tell me, who is RAGE going to give a DNH to,
xKITCHENx, an alliance that no major RAGE leaders has ever
heard of and whose leaders are complete unknowns, or
xSINKx, whose leader is friends with Tirol and Kreator? Even
if xKITCHENx is a better overall alliance than xSINKx, who do
you REALLY think will end up getting the NAP? Obviously
xSINKx, since they have a leader who knows Tirol and
Kreator. If your alliance has no leaders who can get
NAPs/DNHs with the major alliances, your leaders suck and
should be replaced by leaders who can get those
NAPs/DNHs.
Also, consider this: Looking at the major alliances, how
many of them were actually started from scratch? And out of
those started from scratch, how long ago were they started
from scratch? And out of those started from scratch, who
was the founding leader? Except for Elites (which was
started over two years ago) and MD (started over two and a
half years ago), EVERY major alliance has been a spinoff of
another major alliance (ie. SOL and ARROW originally being
part of UCN), or had a founding leader who was a major
leader in another major alliance (ie. Samoan founding Titans
after being the dominant force behind MD's success). Why
do you think this is the case? Although there are several
reasons, one of the most important ones is that the leaders
of these alliances had tons of connections to other major
alliances, and were able to get great pacts right off the bat
with little effort.
2) Doing retals. This is also extremely important, obviously,
since if you retal all of an alliance's hits on you, it's doubtful
they'll continue to farm you if you keep doing 1000 acre
retals for their 100 acre grabs. If your alliance is in any way,
shape, or form halfway decent, you should know how to retal
properly. If you don't, well, you really have no business
leading an alliance, and you're probably one of the reasons
your alliance sucks and is being farmed.
However, I will discuss some common misconceptions and
myths regarding retals that aren't really common
knowledge:
a) You can't have 1 or 2 guys doing all the retals for you.
This will actually cause your alliance to continue to be
bottomfed on. Why? Several reasons. If your retals are
successful, who gets the land? Obviously, the guys doing the
retals. Who loses out? The guys in your alliance that got
grabbed, since they lost their land, and didn't get it back
since they didn't do the retal. What's going to happen is that
those 1 or 2 guys who are getting fat and doing the bulk of
your retals could acheive a decent NW, but the rest of your
alliance is going to fall very far behind, since they're still
being farmed. As you know, you can't netgain well if you're
being grabbed multiple times a day. So, those guys will lag
behind, and the gap between your 1 or 2 guys doing retals
and the guys in your alliance who are being farmed will
continue to increase. Eventually, those 1 or 2 guys won't be
able to do all the retals anymore, since there will be just way
too many for them to handle. Farming will continue, and
your alliance will finish with pathetic total and avg NW, and
probably not have many countries ranked above 1000 (even
those 1 or 2 toprankers doing all the retals, especially if
those guys are all jetters, since then they'll probably end up
being farmed too once it becomes clear the alliance can't
retal all their hits on major alliances anymore).
b) You have to learn which retals take priority. Ideally, all
hits should be retalled, but if you can't retal all your hits, you
need to pick and choose which retals to do. The hits you
HAVE to retal are the hits from major alliances, especially
major bottomfeeder alliances (MD, SoF, IX, etc.). They're
the ones you have to retal every hit on because they're the
ones who are going to farm you. The more times your
alliances does 1000 acre retals for their 100 acre grabs on
you, the more likely they will be to give you a NAP/DNH
(although if you followed #1, you should've had a NAP/DNH
already with the major bottomfeeders). You don't need to
make retals if they're insignificant (ie. retals on untagged
countries, retals on alliances that suck or you've never
heard of before, like xSHRIMPx). If you can retal those hits,
sure, you should do it, but preferably have those hits be
retalled by the person who got grabbed, since most likely
the untagged country or sucky alliance isn't very fat, so
having a high ranking all jetter do the retal would be
pointless. Remember, the idea behind selective retals is to
lessen bottomfeeding/farming of your alliance. Retal every
hit by the big bottomfeeders first to send a message that
they should put you on DNH, then concentrate on retalling all
hits.
The below reasons aren't as important as #1 and #2, but still
are a factor:
3) Don't come to AT and start crying and whining about being
farmed/bottomfed. It doesn't help you out at all, and just
makes people pissed off at you for being such idiots and
pussies. If there really is a problem in terms of # of times
your alliance is being hit by a specific alliance, contact a
head in that alliance via ICQ and talk about it with them
privately.
4) Don't come to AT and brag about how great your alliance
is doing. Don't talk about how much ass you're kicking, don't
talk about how you're going to rule Earth within a reset or
two. That just makes people laugh at you and want to farm
you for being idiot newbies.
5) When talking to heads of major alliances on ICQ, don't
brag about your alliance, insult their alliance, or b1tch and
whine. That just pisses them off and makes them less likely
to negotiate with you and give you a DNH or reps.
Basically, this is what you should do to stop being farmed:
1) Get good leaders who have connections with the leaders
of the major earth alliances and can get NAPs/DNHs with
those major alliances. In particular get pacts with alliances
that are heavy bottomfeeders. If your leaders can't get
these pacts, fire them and get leaders who can.
2) Retal wisely. Encourage people to do their own retals, and
only rely on all jetters and toprankers doing retals if there
truly is no one in the alliance that has even a slight chance of
succeeding. Avoid stupid things like missile retals. Prioritize
retals so that you retal all the hits from major alliances that
you want DNHs with.
3) Use common sense, and don't
b1tch/whine/cry/brag/etc. on AT or to heads of major
alliances on ICQ.
Personally, I'd recommend that you just merge into another
alliance for at least a reset (preferably two or three).
Remember, nearly every single new alliance that has
become a major alliance because a major alliance AFTER it
had been a part of a preexisting major alliance. There are
only two exceptions to that rule (MD and Elites) and those
exceptions happened 2+ years ago when there were far far
far fewer alliances in existence, when bottomfeeding wasn't
nearly as rampant as it is now, and when the retal system
and other now standard policies were different. I'd say that
you have no chance in hell of becoming a major alliance
unless you play as a division in an existing major alliance
first. "
