Your avatar gets quite a nasty flash near the top. Could you fix the words so they don't flash on and off? I think that looks better.

after a little bit more (more like 2 hours) I found a better crown.
unfortunately it more for a front shot and not a side shot.

Do you mean this one?

If you take off the left blue field and seal. You can then add a while border and you have the flag for the Army of northern Virignia. Since you have a Max of 64x64 for the avatar it is hard to use a flag without some distortion. Unless you get one of the animated ones like Giancarlo has.

I had a thread in OT I was practicing with a couple of Avatar possibilities. Snapcase and Hueij were kind enough to offer assistance. Here is a link to the thread.

What I am trying to do is take the attached picture and lighten it somewhat so that it is not so dark when it is shrunk. I've been playing with Corel PhotoShop but the color contrast is wiggy, plus I'm not very experienced with it. If anyone has the time or inclination to tackle this project you'll have my admiration and respect.

I thought the shrinking came out pretty good with the one above, it's just dark. I felt like if i could lighten the center puzzle piece some, it would be a little clearer when it is shrunk. The biggest problem I've had is the amount of shadowing in the picture. That's what I liked about the one that you shrunk, it is a better contrasting picture, it just doesn't shrink well.

Thanks Urban. I really like the color in yours.

Once you start shrinking these things, the puzzle pieces tend to start looking like amoebas. For me anyway.

Yeah it's not easy to work with small images, esp one with intricate designs since you are bound to lose a lot of details. A lot of images that look great don't survive the shrinking process unfortunately. For example take a look at Chowlett's initial crest.

GIFs are worse since you are limited to 256 colours. JPEG images are generally better since you get to use the full spectrum of colours for details. However the worst are transparent GIFs, which are a pain in the posterior to work with, unless you have something simple like the smilies. Nothing beats a clearly defined black border Most of the time I'd end up with the pencil tool crawling around the edges to clear out those pesky pixels that have colours just slightly different from the background, forming an ugly "halo" type thing around the image.

Could you make an image of Dr Strangelove in his wheelchair fighting with his arm? How about one of the cowboy-bomber pilot riding his nuke down to the ground?

Could you then flank the image on one side with the Pink Panther, and on the other Chancey Gardner? This would make a lovely tribute to Peter Sellers. OTOH it would be too crowded to use as an avatar, so how about just ol' Doc Strangelove fighting with his dyskinetic arm?
