Well, since we have this new polling system, let's try it out with this question: How many Civilizations do you like in a game, and why? I like seven, for diversity.

Seven, but if there were more -- say, 32 for the gigamaps -- I'd gladly choose that one

I enjoy a target rich environment. I also leave the dead color respawn on, so that I get a total of 18 opponents.

You will get there.^ It seems what I suspected was true, that almost nobody plays with less than seven civs. As some people have mentioned, I would like to see even more civ in civ-3.

I voted 7, but that was for SP

For MP, my optimal is 4 human players, no AI

Any more and the game goes a little to slow.

For SP : Seven is better. IA get more sciences (because of alliance, steal, city capture).
And is more actif. You can have allied (not great allied of course).

For MP : 5 players. Less is less fun, more is slower.

I disagree, with less civs there is more room to expand and so the ai can be more difficult to bring down

Seven.

Early on, I tried it with 3 a couple of times.
Not as much fun. Also, GL was one of my favorite wonders at the time and it wasn't much good with only 2 AIs.

Seven--the more, the merrier! Thirty-two (thirty-one? must not forget the barbs...) civs would be even better--as long as the total city limit was increased by an appropriate amount.

i feel the same way...... 4 in MP is purrrrrrrrfect i think... but you need all seven against the AI

After several trials, I prefer big maps with 7 civs: space enough to start and possibilities to bong a couple of AI heads. Ah! by the way, emperor level

I'll go 7 civs no matter what size map I'm using. varuety makes it more interesting. somebody is always conquered before I find them, anyway, so it may be more like 6 civs in the end.

got to turn that respawner back on...

If I want to have lots of room to build, I can edit the game.txt and play by myself! no opponents at all!

usually more fun when the zulus come calling, though, demanding money to finance a war on the other side...
