The "little islands" are part of the British isles, but like Iain said, this term is purely geographic. The channel islands are separate islands, like EST said.

GP: Not really. Originally I suppose yes they were, but devolution has introduced lots more differences. It is more like the relationship each US state has with each other. They are all part of the country, but have powers to make decisions and laws separate to each other.
