 WHAT ABOUT A HAREM?
Instead of the dull throne room from civ2, they could add
a harem w/ foxey ladies (ala foreign advisor civ2 , but nude).
As you could imagine, when you conquer another civ, a sexy lady from that nation would be added, and numerous Unix (don't know how to spell) would be there to guard them.
You could get silky pillows in funky colours when performing nicely on techs, polls, etc.
Then there could be the opposite for female leaders so they have some fun too.
Oh, by the way: if some "the people love you" sequence begins. They should be carrying pictures of you around in the streets.
And a weapon parade would be nice when conquering (ala CCCP 1.May parade, which could scare the hell out of anyone )

Maybe alternatively to the harem, which most likely would not succeed  , The Soviet-like, national PARADE could be the solution to the throne-room-succession problem.
Imagine adding some foxey lookin' cheerleaders in various uniforms for each epoch reached and.
Or having your Palace in the backgound, constantly evolving, and
adding your army's newest chariot, musketeers, tanks, ICBM etc. when reaching differet epochs ???
For example:
You discover feudalism, you get a mounted lord , wearing armour, in the lead.
You conquer another city --> you get rounded up P.O.W. 's marching in the middle of it.
You destroy another civ --> their leader carried in a bamboo cage, utterly humiliated by hoochie-spitting and tomato-throwing pedestrians...
Hneh...nhehhehehneehheee....
