Well, the extension .SEA is not recognized on my PC. You say it is a self extracting archive? I tried changing the extension to .exe and running it but Windows doesn't recognize it as a valid win32 app.

Best to stick with zips.

Self-extracting archives can not be used on different operating systems. So a Mac self-extractor won't work on Windows and the other way round Windows self-extractors won't work on a Mac. It's probably best to follow Tom's advice and use regular zip files.

After doing a search on www.download.com I found Aladdin Expander which can handle those hqx files. I suggest you also take a look there; maybe they have a Mac program there that can make zips.

thnx Paul.I had a look and there is indeed some utilities available.

There is MacZip which requires me to send $15 to get the code that zip uses or something like that.

Then there is PKzip. How common is pkzip? It says others MUST have pkzip to unzip

I don't know everything zbout zip files, but as far as I know zip is a standard format, so if you make a zip file with pkzip you can unzip it with any unzip program. If you want to be sure that it works you can download it and make a test zip. You could then mail it to me or post a download link here and I'll see if it works.

The zip file will unzip and the scenario can be played, but it contains a .bin file instead of a .txt file. That means that you won't get the text displayed when you start the scenario.

ya,if I unzip the way I normally do I get the same .bin but when I use this smartzip thingy it comes thru fine.Is there anything in your utility's preferences that may cause this?I have a setting in stuffit that decides whether or not text files are converted(whatever that means)
If not this smartzip must do something alittle different.

hang on... I just had a looksy at the smartzip preferences and there was a box "skip resource fork for text file" that was not enabled.

would that be the culprit?

yes i beleive it was.I think I got it! what an ordeal

thnx Paul

It almost works right. I am now getting a text file, but unfortunately there seems to be a problem with the end-of-line. I get some character where the end of the line should be and this means that Civ2 won't read the text file. When I removed those things and hit enter at those places it did work. I didn't have that problem with the hqx file you had first. But you are getting closer to where you should be.

Well, I seem to have learned something: StuffIt Deluxe doesn't create zip format archives! I thought that it could expand/translate AND create ANY format. Well, I'm half right. StuffIt Expander can open and decompress any format, but the program seems to only create StuffIt (.sit) archives. One way to cope with this is to offer both the Windows and Mac StuffIt Expander versions (free for the download from Aladdin Systems and also included on my StuffIt Delux CD so I could send someone a copy if needed) on any site that you use StuffIt archives. I beleive that ACS DB contains both versions.

As for PKZip, it seems to be on every PC that I've ever used and I always assumed that it was the Windows standard for compression similar to the way StuffIt appears in the Mac IS world.

I suppose none of that was terribly helpful, but what the hey...

BTW, I sucessfully downloaded the file, "unzipped" with StuffIt and played the "scenario" sucessfully. As the benevolent Mac Moderator, I will take care to avoid evil, less I become the subject of a smashing scenario!

So, when's the last time you used a PC?

PKzip was probably the standard in the DOS days, but at the moment most people seem to use Winzip. But there are also loads of other zip/unzip utilities available on the net.

Smash, the end of line problem has to do with whatever word processor you used to create the text file. It is not a true ASCII text file - it still contains formatting information.

I opened the file in Word 2000, and Word interpreted the formating information correctly. Saving the file back out with the option "Text Only with Line Breaks (*.txt)" fixed the problem - ie the formating information was removed and it was saved as a "true" text file.

So try to save the text file out again with a different file type option.

Paul: Yep. It's WinZip at work. Hey, I noticed that ya'll PC'ers have a "desktop" and "trash can" now! Gee, wha'll they think of next?

FYI: I note at the WinZip homepage the WinZip is in version 8.0 and availible for download and costs $29 for a single computer license. I didn't see anything about versions or extractor for Mac, but I sent them an email asking if they have Mac versions.

BTW Tom, I had no problems with the original text file on my Mac MPG version.

ok.I make the txt with clarisworks(appleworks now).Basic word processing, spreadsheet blah blah.It never occured to me that PCs wouldn't "read" it,but it makes sense.

I wonder what I could use?Maybe I have a look and see if there is some utility.

PC trash can is called "recycle bin" so it is an original idea

So Macuser, do you actually use that PC at work or did you just look at it for the first time? I mean, you must have noticed the desktop and recycle bin before today if you actually used the thing.

Smash, when you save a textfile do you get any options that you could try to change that might make the end-of-line readable in Windows?

What did you use for the one in your zip? I would go for text. The other options would produce formatted text which is not what you need. Civ2 uses plain unformatted text files.

This time I saved it as a TEXT and reposted once again.So....if you could give it one more shot.
