Rhuarc, I don't have much technical knowledge of modems, but I used to have an ISDN update and I hardly noticed any speed improvements.

I think most people who have lower load rates than you have have cable or DSL, which are noticably faster IMO.

The thread took 13 seconds to load on my connection. I had no other programs using the internet open. After loading this thread, I went to download the DirectX 8 SDK and it was downloading at 600KB/s.

So the slowdown is on your end a great deal of the time, MarkG.

You need a fatter pipe to support all of the bells and whistles on this new forum.

I am at work on T1 connection, and it takes between 3 to 28 seconds to load... i feel it should be faster, and I am using the light style!

OK, for the record, tried this from home.

The front page (the one with the forum choices on it) took 149 seconds, in light style, no avatars. The Appolyton/Community page I gave up on after about 15 minutes. This is with an ISDN connection (every other site, ACOL for example, loads fine).


Posting from work now, where it is usually <5 seconds for a load (This reply window took 2.818s). (Again this is light style, no avatars.)

Is there any reason that so many people are having problems with apolyton loading? I mean do our servers have bandwidth problems or is it some bottleneck somewhere else? It is obvious from everone's posting that there is a problem with the pages loading. Now we just have to figure out why!!

But it is still sending stuff - it just goes down to about 1% every 20 seconds or so. Also, the ads seem to load fine

If I reload, it just does exactly the same thing - loads the ads and the 'apolyton' header and then crawls...


(That reply box load was 2.291s, so no probem from work )

In my instance, pages load smoothly at morning and noon but in the evening and later, the pace slackens seriously. Does anyone else have that problem or is it just here? Loading other sites occurs more slowly here at that time as well, but not nearly as pronounced as at poly.

[edit] BTW, I live in the West-European time zone.

30 seconds for the page to load up, another 30 seconds for the reply page to open. Using a 28.8K modem. As others have already observed it's pretty slow in the evenings (I'm on GMT). But there's been a noticeable improvement in the speed tonight in comparison to the past few days.

Yesterday there was a serious jamming at some of the tier-1 ISP's and the backbone. It's not until 4pm here (GMT+8), after the operators had switched to backup routes, that the speed improved considerably.

There's a strange DNS problem. Sometimes my browser is stuck trying to revolve the hostname, but reloading fixes it. Thoughts?

i like the full style better to light.. i am not overly depressed with the average speed around here, jsut bothers me when i have to press refresh or get coneection timed out pages instead of apolyton pages....
