If they're going back to the ending that Civ 1 had that means they're going to implement a zoomed out replay of the whole game, in which you'll be able to watch how the whole game progressed for all the civs. I always loved this feature of civ 1, because it gave me the chance to see the "big picture" that I couldn't see while playing the game.
There's no reason there couldn't be a Hall of Fame too.

I am certainly hoping that there will be a Hall of Fame... however, there is one thing that I feel could be improved: in Civ 2, every time you retired from a game (even if just to see the powergraph etc.), you would get an entry in the hall of fame, which means that if you retire five times in a single game in which you have high scores, the entries would replace any other games in the Hall of Fame completely.
I would like it so that the Hall of Fame only had one entry for a single game so that when you retired or the game ended, an earlier and lower high score of the same game would no longer be visible. This way, the Hall of Fame would indeed contain the five best games you have ever played, not just different retirement years in a single game. (And I know, you can always use the Quit command to end the game, but most of the time you want to retire anyway to see your score, powergraph, replay etc.)
