Why is this happening? I bought SMAC and sent it off to my nephew, and after installing, he doesn't have the Hotseat/Play by Email option listed in multiplayer. The 4 different Direct Play options are there, but since I can't play Direct Play thru a firewall, was hoping to play PBEM. I am sure the game included the most recent upgrades. Has anyone else run into this problem, and give me advice? Thanks in advance.

You have to get SMAC 4.0 for those options to be enabled.

I installed the English 4.0 patch today and I don't have a hot seat option either, just the direct plays.
