I would replace skii troops with (Time out:0 days after 02-07-2001, 06:12)
Nothing, I would keep them
Regular Army units, they should come after conscripts anyway
Special forces, such as commandos or rangers
Guard units of some kind
Something else but skii troops should definitely be out
Naked women or girls in sexy lingerie, that sort of thing

Damn right. God they look bad.

But skii troops should be replaced. They are only used by a handful of countries.

I kind of like the idea of regular or guard units. Special forces could work but they shouldn't make up the bulk of your army.

and what about the elephants being able to move on ice? "it´s unrealistic, remove them!!!!"

civ aint supposed to be truely realistic, then they couldn´t even make musketeers, they would have to make neutral, boryng units that could apply on every civ and terrain.

civ is all about reflecting some of the greatest era´s in human history

I'd hardly call skii troops symbolic of a great era. They have only figured famously in 2 battles that I recall - the Russo Finnish war of 1939 and the Russian winter offensive of 1941/2. Their impact in the latter case is overrated.

i think they´re cute anyway. for ME, they represent WWII in an excellent way. besides, iv´e never commanded them on jungle. aint they supposed to defend or something?

there´s much worse things with civ II, like the fact that the Vikings may spawn in australia if you have respawn civ on. i just hate such stuff, i want a respawn, but in a historically accurate area.

Yeah, I did find the alpine troops a little silly, especially when you see them defending an AI city in the middle of a desert or something. I mean, what precisely are they skiing on? Get rid IMHO.

Damm straight I hated them, they looked ugly had to much power for sky troopers. They should not be included in there current form or made a special unit like parratroops or marines.

Not exactly, Alexander's.
During WW I alpine troops played a relevant role on Alpi Mountains, border between Italian and Austria/German troops. They fought very bloody battle and lot of skirmish, hidden in trenches and galleries digged in snow and rocks. A page of history I understand lot of people don't have a hint.

During WWII Italian Alpine troops played a part as "special troops", fighting in Greeks (and almost loosing against the good greeks troops, if not for german help), in USSR campaign, probably loosing the greatest number of italian soldiers as missed in action during the winter battle and the retry. They fighted with honour, but where lost for insufficient logistic and old weapons.
Wonder what: Italian alpine troops fighted in North Africa campaign too!
Desert don't seems full of mountain, I agree, but...
Italian Alpine troops where always considered as "veteran troops", not special forces as SAS or Navy Seal, of course, but better trained and organized that standard italian infantry.

OTOH, I agree that a more generic name can be used by Firaxis, but they aren't very different (in concept) from marines: they started as units for special purpose (embarked infantry/mountain trained troops), then their dedicated training and organization changed them as "all purpose" troops, only better.

USA used marines everywhere, don't they?

Whatever they're called (and whatever hot-pink uniform they're given), they'd be better with more than one move point. Sure, they can move through mountains but it doesn't help when they arrive at their target and can't attack without penalty. At the risk of making them too powerful, of course. Two moves might be too much - is it possible to have a unit with 1-1/3 or 1-2/3 as its base movement?

Sure, why not? And German/Austria alpine troops, too.

Do you think only USA troops fighted during two world wars?

Italians troops under fascism lost the WWII war, mostly against USSR troops on East front. That's history. German and Japanese troops lost, too.

Do you suppose their soldiers haven't good military tradition and a place to fill in history and Civ?

Most of special infantry corps fits somewhere in military history: maybe you don't know (or don't like) when and why.

Ok, if I'll have some spare time I'll give you some figures about alpine troops... but may be you don't care
Please, feel free to let me know.

I dunno...the ski troops always irritated me in a way, much as the lawyer and televangelist units did in CTP. I think that it's because it's a silly military unit. Yes, they did have an impact in battles and wars, but they don't really mesh with the rest of the game's units. maybe it's just the uniforms. I just imagine Buffy skiing down in Vail when I see those units. I think if they were given camoflage or something it wouldn't bother me so much.

The ski troops just do not fit in Civ... I say that we eliminate that type of 'elite' unit and just give a regular unit that has been trained double the time the extra bonuses.

But if the ski tropps remain they should only have bonuses on mountains and hills (IN WINTER)

DarkCloud, you are mixing your dislike for units display (snow, ski, etc.) with alpine units advantages.
As paratroopers are show in game with open parachute, but it's meant as a light infantry with high mobility support (by paradrops, but also disembarking from helicopters or transport planes, it doesn't really matters), you should consider alpine troops are (where) meant to operate in difficult terrain (not necessary snow) with low mechanized transport because of difficult to operate them in difficult terrains (jeeps and humvee aren't around, and they don't work well in narrow pathway anyway).
They had light artillery and mortar easy to transport and deploy, they had engineer to build trenches and similar fortifications using only their arms, some tools and dynamite...

But if you really feel the need, heck, change that name and icon on units.txt and live better

BTW, I haven't seen Alpine troops on early screenshoots so far, so your hope can already be a reality

The fact is that ski troops (as a concept) have all of their interesting aspects covered by guerilla troops. I think that ski troops should simply be eliminated, with no replacement unit.
