A crucial inquiry Suffering from ads?

Back in the old days *inserts smily of oldtimer with pipe* it was very easy to see if a thread had a new message since the last time you opened it. It had a different color in my IE5.

Now in the modern age (remain serious please) I simply cannot know if a thread has a new message or not. I can't possibly remember who posted last so is there another way?

OK, I posted that before your second post....

I think the red folders are the threads which have new posts since your last visit

Those that you have posted in have the black dot in the center.

It doesn't work that way either because when I open a (red) thread to read it and then press «off topic» the thread stays red.

Sorry, my mistake. The folders do change colour on the fly.

The solution is to get a different browser. I recommend Mozilla

This feature works flawlessly in my experience with IE 6.

I remember having the same trouble where clicking on a link would not change the color. I think it was simply cache settings, but whatever the reason is I have not had the problem with IE 6. So think about upgrading or using as he says Mozilla.

No only the beta version is out. That is what I am using.

My understanding is that IE6 is going to be released with Microsoft Windows XP and not before that time. They will bundle the two and it will be all a part of their "innovation" thing.

But no matter my feelings on MS I have to admit that their browser works and that is why I am using it.

The trouble with using IE6 is there are all sorts of nasty surprises waiting to spring on you when you least suspect it. Also given the facts that a) it's bloated and b) it's not standard compliant should steer people to other browsers.

If you don't like Mozilla there's always Opera.

Even when it crashes Windoze?

Nobody wants XP anyway you need such a powerful computer just to run it. Which reminds me of the saying, "Which Andy giveth, Bill taketh away."

You can't get truer than that.

The courts have ruled that that is illegal and violates the Sherman Acts because they are using a monopoly to create another monopoly. The question is punishment.

The Jackson court ruled to break the company up. Now that an appeals court has undid that order, it very likely that MS will escape with little punishment.

As for whether or not MS will continue bundle their operating system and browser, they will. In fact, when Balmer was asked what by law he feels MS can bundle with their OS, he said anything. So they still feel they have committed no wrong and we will continue getting IE, Windows Media Player, and other programs bundled with their OS.

tniem,

It's anybody's guess what's going to happen with the M$ case. It could range from very little happening to M$ to punishment more severe than before. There's an article in the Christian Science Monitor yesterday discussing Dubya's anti-trust policy; they expect it wouldn't be changed much from the Clinton years.

Still, even if the government case isn't going anywhere fast, there are still civil and class action suites that can now go ahead because the appeal court found Miscro$oft is guilty of anti-trust violations.

The colored envelopes work fine for me.

I can't get too upset about the Microsoft case. The major plaintiff, Netscape, merged with AOL, which may eventually dominate the internet in a way far more detrimental to the public good than Microsoft's dominance of the operating system market. I know, I've been an AOL customer.

Suffering from ads?

I'm in the same situation as paiktis - there's just no rhyme or reason to the colouring of thread icons anymore. When I first log on, a certain number of them are red (the ones with new posts since my last visit), but after checking even just one thread, hitting the back button (or Alt+<-) and then pressing refresh (F5), they're all yellow.

Now under the old system, a thread you'd read with no new posts would be dark blue (as opposed to the other, light blue threads) - and it would stay dark blue until there was a new post to it, no matter if you hit refresh (F5) - or even logged of and on again hours later. That was a very userfriendly way of keeping track of what threads to check for new posts.

I noticed this backwards step right from the time of the forum upgrade, but it's still annoying... I guess we'll just have to learn to deal with it now that we got such an otherwise immaculate upgrade with many improvements.

Or is there some hope of the admins employing a colour code for the threads a la the old one?

What are you talking about?

In uBB there were also these coloured envelopes with the same colour code system.

Doc,

What are you talking about? There's no plaintiff in the M$ anti-trust case. It started as "The Government of United States and 19 States vs Microsoft Corp," with some states dropping out later.

Also I don't see anybody has the ability to dominate either the Internet or the World Wide Web. If anybody, that's what M$'s trying with ".NET."

I'm well aware of that, but I'm talking about the colour of the thread subject itself (the text). It would change from light blue to dark blue once you read the thread. Only when new posts were added to the thread would it turn light blue again.

I'd like to see this feature carried over to the new system. As it is now, if you refresh the page, all thread envelopes turn yellow so it's basically useless other than when you first log on.
