The conditoins for causing civil war in a Civ are
1) There must be 6 or less players (so there is someone for the rebels to become)
2) You must be the most powerful when you take over their capital.
Sounds like the Americans were the most powerful civ at the time, so you taking over their capital didn't cause civil war.

Uh, Tizzy, i thought that if you captured the capital of the MOST powerfull empire, that empire would split. I don't believe it has anything to do with your own size.

yeah it was my understanding, too, that you had to take the capital of the most powerful civ. It wouldn't make any sense if YOU had to be the most powerful civ...

There are three conditions that have to be met. The civilization to be split must have:
1. a civilization of the same color that has not previously been in the game.
2. more than four cities (five or more).
3. been larger than your civilization.
When the split does not occur, it's usually because of a miscalculation of size. I've been disappointed several times when I was sure the other civilization was larger than me, and it wasn't.

rarely happens to me. It happened when I played the battle of the sexes scenario which I believe was on the conflicts of civilization disc. It was the only way I can win. The females were tearing my howies apart . So I just went for their capitol and bam it was all over.
