Nomadic Tribes Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

We all know Barbarians are about as hard as the average boy band.

In addition, how about the appearance of nomadic tribes such as the Huns, who would suddenly "turn-up" at your doorstep in hoardes, cause mayhem for a few years and then disappear. They would appear maybe 2-3 times in an entire game.

That way you wouldn't be allowed to build up your cities without considering defence. I know most people would say "leave this for a scenario", but Earth history should be represented better in the main game.

Ah... something like this is already used. They are called barbarians. Maybe you should set the barbarian level at the highest level, restless tribes I believe for Civ2.

Put an end to popups!

You could make the people in the cities with riots spawn a Militia unit every turn they are rioting and cause trouble that way?

the barbarians in civ 3 have "encampments", which are basically like size 1 cities.

multiple units pop out of them every so often.

when you destroy one, another forms somewhere where you cant see (fog of war).

this encourages you to continually explore the land around you.

i rememebr reading this somewhere.

Uber is right, they do have encampments.

Recurve is also right about barbarians being pathetic. Even on the highest level, tech.

Also -- the highest barb setting is Raging Hordes in civ.

Good idea. This would also encourage people to keep their people happier.

I wouldn't mind seeing some changes made to barbarians in Civ3.
In Civ2 they were either too predictable or became a nuisance. They tended to appear in the same place with the same units with the same number of units at times pretty regular intervals. I think the game would be much better if their appearance was a bit more random. At time being a minor nuisance to be put down by your legions, at others time acting as a major threat to an empire. For realism, they could react to events in parts of the world yet unexplored. Many of the tribes that plagued Rome were driven West by events in their Central Asian homeland.
Barbarians on the other hand became a nuisance in late games, particularly when the appeared in the same place in the middle of your empire every five turns or so. In one game my civ had orginally been located on island big enough for about four cities, and once placed occupied all the land except for one square....Sure enough every five years. I can understand the occasional uprising, but by the end game suppressing the same group over and over again became quite a chore in an area I had ruled for 6000 years. Perhaps the new culture/border system will be a solution.

This is actually very close to Firaxis's wording. I imagine that the barbarians will be quite a bit smarter in civ3.

Historically you had such hordes coming all the time. Only now in the modern world this dissapeared. Therefore in Civ III as long as there is unclaimed 9by any civ) a large portion of map you could have barbarrian hordes generated there after some time. biggest hordes could be generated in medieval times if the terrain is unexplored. This could be a good reason to expand (if ICS is dead )

Over time, I turned them off in Civ 2, for they were just boring, and not a real threat.

Well, and in modern times you have guerillas, terrorists et al.
I would like barbarian "terrorist" diplomats who come sometimes destroying a random "non priority" building (I mean not the city walls or SDI or something). Culturally not assimilated cities could cause such terrorists or create partisan units.

no. if u noticed, i said they were like size 1 cities, or even COLONIES, whereas if u attack them and win they die and respawn somewhere else.

and i doubt enroaching culture would subvert a barbarian city, but perhaps it would KILL it.
