i like waiting till later for wars. I dunno, its just so much fun to bomb raid a city then paratroop into it followed by vet mech infantry.

And how often does the AI build alpine troops? i have only seen about 1 in a capitol wchich was then defended by 2 riflemen and a phalanx.

That's a part of AI's incompleteness. Sometimes more than anoying.
As far as I can see, you haven't done anything wrong.
Of course you could have fought an early war against one or two
of your enemies, but it's up to you.

I dunno, depends on the strategy. If you try to conquer,
then you need a least some good cities and hard cash.

to steal techs from your enemies?

with leos there is a sure way (atleast on king.)

make a feline for republic, then invention TAKE NOTHING ELSE (except maybe trade and pottery).

a few techs before you get invention start building any wonder in your highest productive city. then as soon as you get leos, switch to it.
