Mac Civ3 Support Apolyton, buy Alpha Centauri

Any guesses on system requirements? Release dates?

According to news items, February 2002 is the target date for a mac release, putting it at least four months after the PC date. Not bad, but maybe Westlake and others signed the deal too late for a Diablo-like showing.

I've got an iMac 333/64 RAM at my house as of now. It's showing its age, so I might invest in a new one by the end of next year. Until then, it's up in the air. The main concern I have is the 64 RAM, not large by any standards. The PC side requires 32 at the very least, so it's going to be close. No doubt, I won't get optimal performance if it does indeed startup, but I can still hope.

Any speculation on the reqs/release dates? I understand my system isn't a game chewer, but it ran The Sims just fine, as good as it gets. If civ3 can't run on this same machine, it's safe to say Firaxis/Westlake didn't program it too well.

"O' Knight who until recently was called SMACed, we have brought you a shrubbery..."

What's up with the name change? Who's "Wiglaf?" It sounds familiar, but I can't place it.

To your question, I sent a note to Westlake yesterday asking them to update us as to the sys req.s (especially related to OS X) and potential release date. I'll let you know what they say.

DUDE! Get thee to a computer store and buy RAM! It is insanely cheap cheap right now and VERY easy to add to your machine! You can check prices at www.Pricewatch.com and order from places such as Coast To Coast Memory

Ever read Beowulf? SMACed was too caps lock oriented and based on one game (I don't play alpha centauri as much as I used to, the graphics started giving me headaches) so I figured a name change wouldn't be bad. As for your email to Westlake, I sent one a while back, still no answer. Hope you have more luck than I did, this is torture.

I've never really had the need in the past for extra RAM...I'm not a hardcore gamer as I'm sure you've noticed. Besides playing, adding memory wouldn't have helped me much, as I don't rely on system taxing programs for work, etc.

Still, if 64 MB of RAM is really that depressing, I think it's time I got moving. Thanks for the links - if I'm reading it right, that memory isn't nearly as expensive as my local stores made me believe. One had a pretty small upgrade for $499...glad I wasn't suckered into it.

Thanks again, I'll try and upgrade this thing into a computer...wish me luck.

If Civ3 requires me to upgrade my OS or anything else for that matter, then I will simply buy another PC.They are dirt cheap now and Apple is going downhill fast.

I might get one either way.I'm so sick of hunting for software in my hometown

Hope you stick with macs, Smash. Not only are you a very valuable asset to these forums, you also aid apple in some of its more difficult times.

Then again, if you have work that requires a PC, or if you have become fed up with apple, I guess I can understand. Keep playing civ, either way

Oh I'll keep my mac,but I'm not going to spend any more money on hardware and what not.No X for me.I watched it go from 8.5 to 10.1 in less than 3 years. If civ won't run on something in the 8.x series then I jump.It very similiar to beta vs vhs.Why fight the current?

realizes some may not know what beta was

The OS jump caught me by suprise too, I'm running 8.6. All of a sudden, 9 and then X! All were a hefty $99, so it's tough to adjust on a dime like that. I see where you're coming from there.

Still, macs are the better machines overall. They only lack the software to prove it. Macs are especially useful for work because of their speed, can't fault 'em there. The cost is a major turnoff, though, like you said. $899 for a PC and $2999 for apple's powerbox. For the average family that just wants a computer, the decision is made without much thought.

Another iMac-like revolution, though, and macs are back in business. Only time will tell, but I like their new ad campaigns. The only question is, did they kick in too late?

Don't give up on Apple yet! A LOT of people are very excited about UNIX with a friendly GUI! I know several PC/UNIX users who are planning on buying a Mac once OS X is truely in a final form. This is going to make a ton of software available to both 'nix users and Mac users. Whether or not that drags in a lot of game developer remains to be seen, but it will make Macs a much stronger and viable platform.

As for Civ III, I'd bet money that it will be a "Carbon" version that will play on 8.5+ with the Carbon Library extension set. It WILL , however, eat RAM!

NO! Can't be any more than 64 megs, right?

Out of curiosity, why would it take up so much memory (I'm guessing 128 or around there)? Seems like it isn't a graphic-oriented program from the screens.

MacUser, I thought RAM went for a buck a meg? Man, where have I been! Pricewatch really has some compelling deals - half off what my local store wanted. The only problem for me is installing the stuff. Not my favorite thing to do (although it's been a while).

Everyone:

Is Apple really back to where it was in the mid-1990s — i.e., ready to slip beneath the waves generated by the M$ iceberg?

Smash ... I feel your pain. If I want software and such for my machine (iMac 333mhz, 160 RAM, OS 8.5.1), I have to order it over the Internet, phone or hop in the car for a 3 1/2 hour journey due southeast.

As for Civ III ... I hope it runs on the my iMac's specs. If not .... hmm ... it's hard to say what I would do right now. I rather like having a decent monetary cushion. To spend it all on a new computer for a mere game (blasphemy! Civ III is not a "mere" game! ) probably isn't sound fiscal policy.

Only time will tell.

Cyber, I'm pretty sure civ3 will run on your mac. If it doesn't...ouch. Something went wrong if a 333/160 can't run a Firaxis TBS game. Then again, what do I know.

As for apple, they aren't in the slums, mostly due to the iMac, but when the next big wave of computers comes, they have to step up to bat and sell sell sell. Microsoft's 95% hold on the market has to be broken sooner or later, and I'm confident it will be. If not, oh well, PCs are good too, and macs will still be in business either way.

MacUser, any word on a Civ3 Mac forum? Would Mark go for that? Might be something worth consideration.

Don't EVEN worry about the installation of RAM on the recent iMacs. I literally had my (then) 7 year old son open the back door with a quarter, and install a 256 MB DIMM in my iMac DV (400 MHz, I've lost track of the lettering designations). The Rev B (233 MHz) was a bit tricky, and required pulling out the guts a bit, so I had my 11 year old do that one! Both worked without a hitch. So do go for it! you'll be glad you did!

Note: If you want explict instruction with pictures, go to the MacAddict Forums and search the Maximum iMac Forum and search for RAM and/or install, etc.

Not to my knowledge, but once the game is released I'll bet they start one as they did for SMAC and CtP.

They really should do it now, when mac users have something totally different from PC users to chat about. Potential system reqs, ship dates, etc.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

I have held off upgrading my Mac for 6 years (Performa 6290). I'm ready to go whole hog - totally cut the line to the past and buy the new 17" screen iMac/cube that Jobs will no doubt release before Christmas.

My concern is the compatibility thing. I really enjoy the mods for CivII but I find I am so limited in what I can use. Let's face it, almost all of the mods are made for PC's. I've converted a couple of basic ones, but since I don't have the Gold edition or Fantastic Worlds I am limited in my options.

I want to be sure that I'll be able to use all of the mods for CivIII or I too will be tempted to switch to the dark side.

I know what you mean. Fortunately, some community-oriented Mac user designed a scenario converter that I found somewhere. If you keep up to date on patches/expansions, converting shouldn't be too much of a problem.

There are two conversion AppleScripts on the Civ2-Mac web page, in fact I have an update to the Brian Neese script that I need to post! (surprize, surprize).

As for CivIII, I think that we are all (PC users too) in a wait and see mode to find out what mods are possible and how easy they will be to convert/port across platforms.

Keep the Faith! Just think, you can now claim to be a 'nix geek!
