Any guesses on system requirements? Release dates?
According to news items, February 2002 is the target date for a mac release, putting it at least four months after the PC date. Not bad, but maybe Westlake and others signed the deal too late for a Diablo-like showing.
I've got an iMac 333/64 RAM at my house as of now. It's showing its age, so I might invest in a new one by the end of next year. Until then, it's up in the air. The main concern I have is the 64 RAM, not large by any standards. The PC side requires 32 at the very least, so it's going to be close. No doubt, I won't get optimal performance if it does indeed startup, but I can still hope.
Any speculation on the reqs/release dates? I understand my system isn't a game chewer, but it ran The Sims just fine, as good as it gets. If civ3 can't run on this same machine, it's safe to say Firaxis/Westlake didn't program it too well.

Ever read Beowulf? SMACed was too caps lock oriented and based on one game (I don't play alpha centauri as much as I used to, the graphics started giving me headaches) so I figured a name change wouldn't be bad. As for your email to Westlake, I sent one a while back, still no answer. Hope you have more luck than I did, this is torture.

I've never really had the need in the past for extra RAM...I'm not a hardcore gamer as I'm sure you've noticed. Besides playing, adding memory wouldn't have helped me much, as I don't rely on system taxing programs for work, etc.
Still, if 64 MB of RAM is really that depressing, I think it's time I got moving. Thanks for the links - if I'm reading it right, that memory isn't nearly as expensive as my local stores made me believe. One had a pretty small upgrade for $499...glad I wasn't suckered into it.
Thanks again, I'll try and upgrade this thing into a computer...wish me luck.

The OS jump caught me by suprise too, I'm running 8.6. All of a sudden, 9 and then X! All were a hefty $99, so it's tough to adjust on a dime like that. I see where you're coming from there.
Still, macs are the better machines overall. They only lack the software to prove it. Macs are especially useful for work because of their speed, can't fault 'em there. The cost is a major turnoff, though, like you said. $899 for a PC and $2999 for apple's powerbox. For the average family that just wants a computer, the decision is made without much thought.
Another iMac-like revolution, though, and macs are back in business. Only time will tell, but I like their new ad campaigns. The only question is, did they kick in too late?

Cyber, I'm pretty sure civ3 will run on your mac. If it doesn't...ouch. Something went wrong if a 333/160 can't run a Firaxis TBS game. Then again, what do I know.
As for apple, they aren't in the slums, mostly due to the iMac, but when the next big wave of computers comes, they have to step up to bat and sell sell sell. Microsoft's 95% hold on the market has to be broken sooner or later, and I'm confident it will be. If not, oh well, PCs are good too, and macs will still be in business either way.
MacUser, any word on a Civ3 Mac forum? Would Mark go for that? Might be something worth consideration.

MacUser, I thought RAM went for a buck a meg? Man, where have I been! Pricewatch really has some compelling deals - half off what my local store wanted. The only problem for me is installing the stuff. Not my favorite thing to do (although it's been a while). |
Don't EVEN worry about the installation of RAM on the recent iMacs. I literally had my (then) 7 year old son open the back door with a quarter, and install a 256 MB DIMM in my iMac DV (400 MHz, I've lost track of the lettering designations). The Rev B (233 MHz) was a bit tricky, and required pulling out the guts a bit, so I had my 11 year old do that one! Both worked without a hitch. So do go for it! you'll be glad you did!
Note: If you want explict instruction with pictures, go to the MacAddict Forums and search the Maximum iMac Forum and search for RAM and/or install, etc.

They really should do it now, when mac users have something totally different from PC users to chat about. Potential system reqs, ship dates, etc.

I'm pretty sure I've got an even tougher process ahead of me. Darnit, I don't have a 15 year old kid yet.
edit/ thanks for the link, I'm on it...
