The thing about the interview that I noticed the most, is the emphasis that Firaxis is placing on making civ3 fun and easy to understand. I hear people here on this board that are dissapointed that civ3 won't have tons of new techs, wonders and units. But more isn't always better. I agree with Firaxis that it is better to aim for quality than quantity. Civ3 won't have tons of new techs, units etc but what is in the game will be fun, immersive, understandable and meaningful. We will be able to relate to each civ because each one will have its own abilities, flavor, in one word: personality. We will understand each tech.
There will be fewer techs, and units and such but everything will have its proper place and balance! As a result, the game will be much more enjoyable!
Besides, they can always add more techs, wonders, units later in an expansion pack. Right now, they just need to make a great game!

I'd have to say the futurism thing was why SMAC didn't quite do it for me, there was no instant empathy. Gunpowder, Knights, London, all concepts we have an instant feel for.
