I have a question here.

How does one insert a new faction into the faction list displayed when you select a faction to play? Through the faction editor?

If I understand your question correctly, the answer is yes. You place the new faction in the Alpha Centauri folder. Then both load and save the faction's .txt file using the Faction Editor. On save, the Faction Editor asks you whether you want to include the faction in the game. A yes anwser apparently updates the list of factions available when starting a new game.

BTW, is there a guide on creating your own faction, and an explanation on how to incorporate base icons not included with smacx? I don't want to create an overpowered faction, but one that is balanced.

I think I can answer my own question, after doing about an hour's worth of searching and rooting around various links. I found a nice place where you can download an off-line guide to creating custom factions, as well as graphics (I think.. not sure about the graphics part).

Seems to be a good site and explanation of everything. Seems through to me.
