Regardless, I have finished with CtP and it will be deleted from my system the day that the last PBEM game I am in is over. It is sad that a design team with so many fantastic and innovative ideas should have produced such a pitiful end product. The really amazing thing is that they managed to do an even worse job with CtP2!!! |
I couldn't agree more, Jon!
I will blindly buy Civ3, because i have waiting for 5 years, and have been salivating for the last year or so at the news of Civ3 coming out. I actually quite liked CTP, but the implementation by Craptivision was very poor. It took PBEM for CTP to realise it's potential, although it really just highlighted what the game could have been with a decent AI.
I will continue with my current PBEM's in CTP, but won't start any more with the exception of finals in the great Lungmatch tournament. Of course, if PBEM in Civ3 sucks, i may come back to CTP for more PBEM games, because i absolutely love PBEM. As a kid, i heard of people playing Chess by mail, and i was intrigued by the idea. PBEM is perfectly suited to TBS games, and i can't understand why some people waiting for Civ3 think it's a bad idea. I can only assume that they have never played PBEM.
Keygen, i won't play Civ3 PBEM straight away, though, as i learnt the hard way in CTP. My tried and true Civ2 strategies did not work in CTP, but the AI couldn't punish me for my mistakes. It took human players to show me my flaws, which were considerable!! I will take time to learn Civ3 before i commit myself to a couple of years in a PBEM game which i will only play poorly anyway! I will cut my teeth against the AI for a bit longer, as it seemed to work for players who came in late to CTP PBEM.
I will keep CTP, but i drool every time i hear Civ3!!!

Just imagine, that CIV3 will not have a decent PBEM facility
Then St. Jon might actually get back into the CTP-PBEM gamers lobby again
I will surely miss his posts when the spanish, welsh, greek and incans has "liberated" France in "Love Conquers". |
There is always the possibility!
Before Civ3 became a 'probability' rather than a 'possibility' I had decided that the only CtP PBEM I would play again would be based on CD's Mod, preferably Slamp's APQS, and I still would but it seems few people, sadly, are greatly interested in that.
I am still playing several SMAC PBEM's, I started playing that long before CtP, and am setting up another at the moment so I shall not lack for interest. I will miss the 'fun' that seems to be missing from SMAC if Civ3 is useless for PBEM but that is largely down to the Players involved.
We CtP'ers were always a tiny community and, with single figure exceptions, an entirely good-hearted and friendly bunch. My desire to quit to CtP is entirely based upon my disenchantment with the Game rather than the people with whom I have played, or even discussed, it with who have been nothing but a pleasure to contest the rightful dominance of the world with!
There are so many good things about CtP but it is one of the rare cases of where 'the sum of the parts is far far less than the whole' and for that Activision should be heartedly ashamed. They released a shoddy, hurried, untested, unsupported piece of dross onto the market and we paid good money for it! They deserve to join Microsoft in the Pit's of Abaddon!!!!!!!!
I thank you for the compliment, TBM - I don't think any PBEM, regardless of Game, can really work without the 'fun' of a little bit of role-play. Certainly if you are in a slow Game you must have something or you can, I have, even forget which Civ you are playing! I did my best there, and it was fun for me, and it is good to know that it was fun for someone else as well.

I can only assume that you are too young to have played board wargames. There, for me, it was not a matter of 'play by mail' but that we could not complete a major campaign game in one session. A simple game of Diplomacy could take 12-16hrs and it was neccessary to arrange to suspend anything lasting longer.
Getting 7-8 players together, in person, was far more difficult but we did it as there was no other way of completing so many games. These extended to heavy brutes like the Europa series where many people had nothing at all to do at all for Turns on end. MPG was a f*** load harder then!
Think yourself lucky!
