What will you do when civ3 is out ? (Time out:0 days after 24-08-2001, 16:04)
No plans yet.
When you have CTP pbem, who needs civ3 ?
Going to civ3, but also keeping all my CTP pbem games.
Going to civ3, but keeping my best CTP pbem games.
Going to civ3, and I quit CTP pbem completely.

going to civ3 ? Inflate your Upload Space

With civ3 out soon, confirmed to have PBEM, I would like to know what you CTP pbem players are planning to do.

Myself, I want to try civ3, but I don't have many pbem games going, so I can also continue these.

I am thinking of starting the first Civilization III PBEM game in Apolyton. As soon as we have a release date I will post there to start a PBEM game.

If you are interested maybe we could schedule from now to start the first Civ3 PBEM game .

Tired of ads?

I won't be going over to Civ3 unless I buy myself a new computer. My poor little P166 isn't up to the task, and I sure don't have 450MB HD space (unless I uninstall CTP...)

I am not going to discuss release dates here. There are better places for that.

Sorry, I heard Civ3 combat blows. Its going to be just like Civ2, which was really annoying (I thought)I like CTP combat much better, with stacks. Most of the other features look cool tho.
I personally dont think Civ3 is going to be that great, I think it will be kinda like CTP-2, most sequels turn out duds anway.

but I will not quit my any of my CTP-PBEM games, I may start a civ3 side PBEM game tho.

New Game, new challenge, but no need to stop any current CTP games.

I'm much more optimistic than Saddam, it's going to be different and maybe some things not as good and some things better but overall I think it's going to be a more interesting game.

And you never know, maybe the AI will be good enough that it will be interesting to play multiplayer games including some computer players.

Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

Some of the things I have heard I do not like at all, a unique unit for each Civ as an example sounds all too much like AoE's, but overall I am certain that it will be a better game.

The biggest failing in CtP was always the AI being so poor that an SP game became nothing but a chore inside the first month. After all these years I still find Civ2 and SMAC a challenge whereas CtP is little more than a joke. It only is through PBEM that I have discovered what a great game it 'could' have been and the wonderful features it introduced but the AI never used and that I never had to use against it. I cannot believe that Civ3 will fail in that department so abjectly.

I certainly will buy it immediately it is released in the UK with high hopes, maybe misplaced, of a game that will become, as both Civ1 & 2 did, the benchmark of excellence in TBSG's.

Regardless, I have finished with CtP and it will be deleted from my system the day that the last PBEM game I am in is over. It is sad that a design team with so many fantastic and innovative ideas should have produced such a pitiful end product. The really amazing thing is that they managed to do an even worse job with CtP2!!!

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Well, I have been playing CTP for 2 years now. I started PBEM several months ago. I enjoy it alot more than playing via IP.

Yea Jon, I hear ya. The AI was and still is ****ty.I think a next generation of AI will soon debut. I got a glimpse of it when I bought Europa Universalis. Hopefully Civ3 will follow in the footsteps of Civ2 and stay true to most of the principles. Except the combat, I absolutely hated Civ2 Combat. Having to go Unit for Unit, I like the stacking in CTP.

Yea Ill be there to buy Civ3. Just not immediately. Im going to wait a week a read the reviews here at apolyton from the users before I spend 50 bucks.

I couldn't agree more, Jon!

I will blindly buy Civ3, because i have waiting for 5 years, and have been salivating for the last year or so at the news of Civ3 coming out. I actually quite liked CTP, but the implementation by Craptivision was very poor. It took PBEM for CTP to realise it's potential, although it really just highlighted what the game could have been with a decent AI.

I will continue with my current PBEM's in CTP, but won't start any more with the exception of finals in the great Lungmatch tournament. Of course, if PBEM in Civ3 sucks, i may come back to CTP for more PBEM games, because i absolutely love PBEM. As a kid, i heard of people playing Chess by mail, and i was intrigued by the idea. PBEM is perfectly suited to TBS games, and i can't understand why some people waiting for Civ3 think it's a bad idea. I can only assume that they have never played PBEM.

Keygen, i won't play Civ3 PBEM straight away, though, as i learnt the hard way in CTP. My tried and true Civ2 strategies did not work in CTP, but the AI couldn't punish me for my mistakes. It took human players to show me my flaws, which were considerable!! I will take time to learn Civ3 before i commit myself to a couple of years in a PBEM game which i will only play poorly anyway! I will cut my teeth against the AI for a bit longer, as it seemed to work for players who came in late to CTP PBEM.

I will keep CTP, but i drool every time i hear Civ3!!!

I will get Civ3, but only after waiting to see how people here find it. I won't make the mistake I did with CtP2. (i.e. buying it the moment I was able to)

I especially want to see how people find Civ3 PBEM, if there is such a feature...

I have seen it mentioned at Firaxis somewhere (yay!). I can't remember when, but it was some time ago. Hopefully, they're still intending to have PBEM. It was also supposed to be right out of the box.

After all this expectation, i'll be very annoyed if it doesn't!

It seems that the "testing" period will be handled by the minority . Well, everything I can do for my fellow CTPers .

I only hope that there will be available a pirate copy here in Greece in the release date as it will take a couple of months probably to see the original in the stores.

Some times I fell this little devil inside me .

Just imagine, that CIV3 will not have a decent PBEM facility

Then St. Jon might actually get back into the CTP-PBEM gamers lobby again

I will surely miss his posts when the spanish, welsh, greek and incans has "liberated" France in "Love Conquers".

I will keep CTP alive I like it, but they had better debug CIV3 @%@%&&#&^% or they will get what I have received from them NO MORE SUPPORT That I think is only fair especially in light of their ability to finish a game properly...

I will try the demos before I invest in it, that again is prudent as I do with most games or programs for that matter...

There is always the possibility!

Before Civ3 became a 'probability' rather than a 'possibility' I had decided that the only CtP PBEM I would play again would be based on CD's Mod, preferably Slamp's APQS, and I still would but it seems few people, sadly, are greatly interested in that.

I am still playing several SMAC PBEM's, I started playing that long before CtP, and am setting up another at the moment so I shall not lack for interest. I will miss the 'fun' that seems to be missing from SMAC if Civ3 is useless for PBEM but that is largely down to the Players involved.

We CtP'ers were always a tiny community and, with single figure exceptions, an entirely good-hearted and friendly bunch. My desire to quit to CtP is entirely based upon my disenchantment with the Game rather than the people with whom I have played, or even discussed, it with who have been nothing but a pleasure to contest the rightful dominance of the world with!

There are so many good things about CtP but it is one of the rare cases of where 'the sum of the parts is far far less than the whole' and for that Activision should be heartedly ashamed. They released a shoddy, hurried, untested, unsupported piece of dross onto the market and we paid good money for it! They deserve to join Microsoft in the Pit's of Abaddon!!!!!!!!

I thank you for the compliment, TBM - I don't think any PBEM, regardless of Game, can really work without the 'fun' of a little bit of role-play. Certainly if you are in a slow Game you must have something or you can, I have, even forget which Civ you are playing! I did my best there, and it was fun for me, and it is good to know that it was fun for someone else as well.

I can only assume that you are too young to have played board wargames. There, for me, it was not a matter of 'play by mail' but that we could not complete a major campaign game in one session. A simple game of Diplomacy could take 12-16hrs and it was neccessary to arrange to suspend anything lasting longer.

Getting 7-8 players together, in person, was far more difficult but we did it as there was no other way of completing so many games. These extended to heavy brutes like the Europa series where many people had nothing at all to do at all for Turns on end. MPG was a f*** load harder then!

Think yourself lucky!
