Have you tried OCC bloodlust? Support Apolyton, buy Alpha Centauri

I have and it's a lot of fun! It's actually two games in one: first you build a spaceship with OC (being a real perfectionist), then your conquer the whole world (being the meaniest warmonger ever seen on the face of the earth). You win this challenge by conquering the last city the same year you land on AC!

The idea of OCC bloodlust is originated from Theben (AFAIK) who wrote this when I asked new (deity) challenges some time ago:

I was thinking of a possible one- OCC bloodlust challenge. I'm not sure how difficult it will be, since a good OCC game puts the player way ahead of other civs in tech & production. But the basic goal is to conquer the world using one city. You'll want to note when you switch from standard passive OCC to conquest OCC, and how long it took to conquer the planet (if able). The least time to conquer from switch is the overall goal, with earlier switch/world conquest times as secondary goals. Some standardization as to what should be done with conquered cities needs to be addressed as well. I suggest:

1) Conquered cities are treated as part of the empire, and may fully contribute to the war effort.

2) Conquered cities may only act to protect themselves and to add money/tech to the empire. New units built or ones homed there may not leave the city radius.

3) Conquered cities must be burned to the ground ASAP. No new construction is allowed other than 1 settler. Buildings may be sold & all citizens MUST be specialists of any type.

New cities may NEVER be founded.

I have played one game with the Theben's number one concept on a small map. I followed these rules in that game:

(1) You have to build the space ship with your OC following all the 'Paulicy OCC-rules'

(2) You can build your space ship according to your own preference as long as you keep in mind that you must actually land on AC with it in the end!

(3) When you think your space ship is ready you move to phase two: the conquest. After that you may not build the ship anymore.

(4) Now it's time to full scale war! You have had it! You can't put up anymore with those condescending civs! Those once allied so called 'friends' tried everything to put you down when you tried peacefully build your space ship.. trying to steal your hard work earned techs not to mention all those armors attacking your only humble city! You, the president, stand up in the senate shouting: 'ENOUGH' . Once we believed that the world would be better place if we just tried to be friends with everyone. Well, where did this way lead us? Look around and see all those backstabbing nations around us! They asked for it; now they get it! No mercy! Now it's OUR turn to teach some manners to the world around us and we'll do it OUR way! All your people supports you: now it's your time to show who RULES!

(5) Okay.. are you now in the mood of annihilating all the resistance? Good! For now on you can wage war just the way you like it (vet stealth figher rules not to mention howies!) I personally like the Theben's number one suggestion that all conquered cities can participate fully to your war effort, building units/improvements, making money, whatever you prefer.

(6) At some point you must send your space ship; the main goal of this challenge is to conquer the last city AND land to AC at the same year! Achieving all the Civ2 three winning goals (being the biggest, conquering all and landing to AC) in the same year. Never building more than just one city.

Well, this is it. It's not so hard with small map and if you want more challenge, just make larger map with smaller land masses and scatter that land down from continents to varied or even archipelago. And of course taking heed of Theben's suggestions 2) and 3).

Why do I like this challenge? Here are some reasons:

(1) During OCC phase, the (tedious) micromanaging work is minimal. You just have one city to take care of.

(2) When in war, you have the joy of using the best weaponry available in Civ2! Who needs to use stealth fighters/bombers in conquest normally? I think quite many of us finishes off the AI resistance far earlier!

(3) Because you have given a lot of techs away to AI their infrastucture/military is quite up to date so you get a slightly more competent AI to crush (U really don't have to kill too many phalanxes in this challenge!)

(4) This challenge is not too easy and requires quite a large variety of skills.

(5) Last but not least: it's so fun to change the playing strategy completely after your space ship is built. This challenge is never dull!

Well, what do you think? Wanna try? Would this be a good new succession game challenge too? Anyone interested? We already have AI headstart & OCC succession games going on. How about this one?

Let me dig in the archives, I suggested something similar and a way to calculate the scores a while back. Got to go now, be back later.

I'm interested to try it out. But how to determine the overall winner?

Carolus, I just read through that thread (thanks for finding it!) and you are the real originator of the 'OCC bloodlust' challenge at year 1999! Congratulations

Your suggestion was quite similar to that I wrote but there is a big difference: in your suggestion the conquest starts after AC landing and I suggested conquest starts immediately after building a fly-able space ship and timing the ship landing to the same year of conquesting the last enemy city.

I somehow like to play when the game result is still not resolved; landing ends the game and stops the score recording. I haven't played for score for a long time but still like to see it.. anyone with me in this?

IMO, we should try to find an easier way to determine the overall winner than your score formula of 'waiting' and 'conquest' turns in your old thread. I'm sorry but I found it quite confusing.

I think it's not so easy to make a 'perfect' score formula. The map size, shape and terrain properties makes a really big difference. I have one suggestion though: the combination of earliest (simultanious) conquest & landing year and the civ score as well as mention of random map generating parameters. You get bonus if you have a large old (more mountains) world with archipelago and small land masses. Then moving the units with transports is the issue in contrary to use of rail road system in a large continent.

Those are just my thoughts and I'd really love to hear more opinions and suggestions from all of you apolytoners to make this challenge more playable and fun! Feel free to question everything and propose whatever pops in your mind!

Does this imply that when we land and conquer does not matter? Just the fact that you manage to conquer the last city when you land is the winning criterion? I guess if two players pull it off, then the earliest conquest wins?

Sounds good, I'm in! All we need now is an OCC game to play. I have a decent one (2 whales and one more trade special I think), but God knows if I can find it. I haven't deleted a single saved game on my hard drive...

No problem, my head started spinning too when I reread the thread... I must have had way too much free time in 1999...

Well, my point with simultanious landing/conquest is to achieve the glorious 'ultimate win' in Civ2. Being largest, having conquered all and landing to AC when the 'official' game time and score recording is still running. To make this more difficult we play the game with OCC rules until we have built our fly-able space ship. Then we have free hands to conquer the planet!

And you are right Carolus, he/she who does all that using the least time, is the overall winner. So the earliest 'ultimate win' year is the winning criteria. We have seen BC-landings recently but somehow I think that we won't see it in this one!

Great! I really believe we are going to get very exiting succession game out of this! We already have three players who are interested (Marko_Polo, Carolus Rex & East Street Trader). We can have a game with three players but I think two more volunteers fits in. Anyone else interested? Welcome aboard!

Then we should decide the map size. I suggest a small map or at the maximum a medium one. We could use one of the Paul's OCC fortnight challenge maps too. For the difficulty, deity is a must. Then we must play with 2.42, because I don't have other versions.

So how this sounds? Any other opinions? I'm open to all suggestions. I'm really looking forward to get this game going!

Tired of ads?

Succession sounds good to me - with very restricted turns - my time is getting too short these days - so if you need another mug - I warn you - my twentieth century combat experience is zilch! - count me in ....

Ok.

SG[1], you've played a couple of succession games. Want to set this up? I'm not picky about starting order or anything like that...

Just as long as nobody picks on me for ruining the collective effort up until my turn...

My e-mail address in my profile is good.

I concur. SG[1], would you like to do setup? I'm quite busy this weekend and I'm in a process of buying a new computer as well. I have now a portable Pentium 150MHz where Civ2 runs moderately so I can play the game.

I would suggest a medium sized map so that we could have more challenge All other settings can be whatever you like. What do you think of that?
