If the English get a second CU, what should it be? Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

If the English get a second CU, what should it be? Providing the first CU is the Man-o-War as people claim.

Spitfire/Hurricane: WW2 fighter, replacing early fighter
Dreadnought: first real battleship in the world, replacing battleship
Longbow: replacing archers
Homeguard: WW2 militia in Britain, replacing partisans

Longbow.

Home Guard is a joke. Dreadnought was copied immediately by the Germans. Spitfires and hurricanes were good planes, but were not really a leap above what else was available at the time.

Longbows decimated the French, and changed the way battles were fought. If the cannon had not been invented, all Continental armies would have come to resemble the Brits. At some battles, 80% of British forces were longbowmen, and good tactics ended up proving the wisdom of this distribution of forces. The crossbows of the time were not even close to as effective, having a much lower firing rate and effective range.

I say Longbowmen.

In regards to the Homeguard, that is quite amusing. Old men, young boys and the occasionally spiv (black market agent). If the Germans had ever made it across the channel the HG would have been decimated.

By the way, ever seen the British comedy Dad's Army? It's about a short, fat, irritable banker turned Home Guard captain. george Mainwaring, played by Arthur Lowe. Absolutely hilarious.

What will you choose for your next second UU civ poll? Greeks? They get Phalanxes as well as hoplites? Keep up the good work.

thanks! I'll certainly keep it up. Next one is the Japanese though. After that maybe the Greeks. Have to find some options though. Phalanx is one. (Macedonian) chariot another. Any other suggestions?

Longbowmen definitely.

They were so effective that the French resorted to chopping off the fingers of captured longbowmen. Hence the wonderful two-fingered salute - originally meaning (paraphrased) "we still have our fingers and we are going to kick the crap out of you now". Also every (well most, practically) village was required to set aside one day a week for archery practice.

Hurricanes were far superior to Spitfires, according to those who flew them; the Spitfire becoming more famous because they were more common.

I thought Dad's Army was a documentary.

Got spare money?

Just for the record, the Puritans came to America after residing in Britain and in the Netherlands.

I think it's the other way around, in the Battle of Britain at least. There were many more Hurricanes than Spitfires, though the Spitfires were superior

I think Mark's correct on this one. The Hurricanes were usually detailed to going after bombers, while the spitfires took on the fighters.

Phalanx was a formation Hoplites used! Choosing Phalanx for a second unit would be like choosing "Turtle" for second unit for Romans.

Not necesarrely (I never could spell this word). There is a big difference between the Greek and Macedonian Phalanx. So instead of naming them both Phalanx or Hoplite, one could be named Phalanx and the other Hoplite. One to replace the Spearmen/Pikemen and the other to replace the Spearmen/Swordsmen.
