The Questions On Civ III Makes Me Thing, How Badly Does SP Suck? Support Apolyton, buy Alpha Centauri

I think it SP sucks royally.
Think about the effect of Great Wall in SP vs. MP for starters.
Then factor in the stupidity of AI's.

What do you think?

Come on cowboy!

Even YOU had to play SP for a couple of years before MP was even invented!

Are you trying to tell me you're would jump straight into MP as soon as Civ 3 was available? (assuming that MP had actually shipped as part of the October release).

Got spare money?

When I first played Civ and Civ2, I used to think SP was really good, even though some of the AI stupidities pissed me off. Now I've been playing MP for a bit I don't think I could go back to it, I want to play an opponent with intelligence, not something that throws unit after unit away on my city walls. I find it hard to understand how anyone who has played Civ2 MP before could want to go back to SP, even if the AI might be better in Civ3. SP is so boring and unrealistic.

Come on, Nimrod.
I played Civ I.
The whole point to MGE was, now pay attention, MULTI PLAYER.
Who wants to go back to black and white televisions, 8 track tapes, and Intellivision?

People are reluctant to change Sloww. They like things that are familiar. Like the same mindless AI they always play in civ 2 now! Maybe if theyre lucky the boys at firaxis will make the ai just as dumb in civ3 so the sp gamers could have the same cardboard, pushover opponent that they love so much right now!

Why would they want to be challenged or anything silly like that?

Though not directed at me:

Yes.
I've played one single player game of civ2. It was a bore. Never gonna happen again. Mp or nothing for me. I can't derive satisfaction from beating the hapless computer anymore.

A possibility would be to employ SP fans as AI's for MP.
That way the jobless rate is bettered, and the AI keeps same level of intelligence.

Suffering from ads?

the big difference is that in mp, a win is an accomplishment. It means you outsmarted a real person, with real thoughts. Much like any other interactions, computer games or sports.

But when one plays the AI, they KNOW that theyre going to win. It's just a matter of how bad one can kill the computer and how big the useless "civilization score" is at the end. There's no real sense of tension or excitement....

Single players tend to be perfectionists. The thought of someone actually taking over their empire (which can happen in mp) probably troubles them greatly. Rather than risk this losing and hurting of their pride they take the safe route and play an opponent that they know they will beat. Some people just can't take losing I guess.

I betcha Sid's that way too. Bet he's never played multiplayer. Him or the game developers.

SP will only be fun at the beginning... While we are still learning what we need to know to win. If the AI is a step up, maybe that short time frame will be longer... but as stated above, once it becomes a matter of when you win, and not if... the fun is no longer there.

In CivII, new challanges were always available for a while. Good scenarios... OCC... Most points, fastest to AC, fastest to destroy everybody... As long as there is something to shoot for, SP can be amusing.

But after saying that...
They better get MP into our hands quickly
