	Why do I get logged out and then get a crappy thread list view? Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Occassionally I get logged out (although my cookie is good for a year supposedly) and have to relog in to Apolyton to post. Also this causes my view of the thread pages to change so that I get a less detailed view of the available threads (for instance I'm unable to see the "last post by" column. This is too bad, since that column is very useful to me in telling where to post.

It uses the light style when you are logged out.
You may alert this by adding &styleid=1 to the end of the forum URL.

I'm using a dial-up modem to connect to my work connection that has a Firewall. I think we I start up IE it says some things about searching for proxy settings.

But how is that an issue?

The lggin off happens infrequently (not automatically)

...may be connected with having lots of frames open based on last several instances

Perhaps because you are ugly and you smell bad.

More likely just a maintenance function of the board that logs posters off occasionally. It does it to me during long sessions.

I've had a problem with a proxy server (Firewalls are also proxy servers) that changes all cookies to last for 10 minutes instead of the default duration. That would log you out if you read a thread for 10 minutes, but the explanation by Lefty Scaevola sounds more realistic.

GP,
have you turned 'Brows board with Cookies' off in the CP?
If so turn it back on.
(I was in the CP changing style when I saw that option (Currently browsing with Netscape as it gives 150% faster page loads then IE, but some colors in the Civ3 style look bad, so I turned back to default))

i get logged out sometimes too, but its happened twice today

currently i use IE6 but its happened with IE5.5 too

i use civ3 default style and i'll be surfing along but occasionally i'll try to post or vote in a poll and it'll tell me i'm not logged in. usually i've already posted and besides i browse with cookies. no firewalls or proxies.

From what I've seen, if you turn off cookies at any time between visits, it counts as a logout, even if cookies were restored before the next visit. I see it as a security feature.

It seems to be a vBB security feature. Just in case somebody hijacks your account that person can't post in your name forever.

I get logged out as well. I never change my cookie settings. I suspect it might happen if I am connected here but not actually clicking on anything for a long time. The only reason I say that is that yesterday it happened and I was away from my computer for a number of hours while at Poly.

I get the same problem but only on my home computer for some reason, which has a standard dial-in connection from a modem. At work or on other computers, I never get logged out. Why does this strange phenomenon occur?
