Deidre Planetbustered me! Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Hi all you Smacers, I summon you on a very sad (or very happy, whichever ) note: Lady Deidre of the Gaians and the b*tch from the Outlaws (The Non-Complicity Front fromSmack's Aldeb mod) have united together and Planetbustered my Capital!!!

IT'S NOT FAIR!!!

I had most of my secret projects in there! Never mind, I still had 10 PBs of my own, on the outskirts of my territory, waiting for the UN Charter to be repelled . Eventually I PB'd the hell out of both of them but...

IT'S NOT FAIR!!!

I had VW, HGP, ME, SC, ToE, EG and NB in there! After having massive drone riots, I eventually re-took control over the game. Whenever I contacted them I got messages like "Ah, Sir Lindly, the ... (I forgot the adjective they used). I see you have been up to your green fantasies but are you ready to face your old enemy, Lady Deidre of the mighty Gaians, once again?"

Dedrie is the only AI faction that has ever attempted to PB me. Two planet busters vs 14 orbital weapons pods did not do so well. During any gap between the AI getting a planet buster and me launching a flock of orbital pods, I make real nice with PB capable with the exception of probing their missiles or a confident capture of all the PB equipped bases.

Once in a militaristic OCC as Morgan, Yang had smothered the world in bases (and was angry with me), so I built a planetbuster - then I noticed one of his bases in PB range had a PB... so I planetbusted it as a first strike type operation.
NOT A GOOD IDEA!!

Turns out he had a couple in reserve and next turn Morgan Industry is a smoking crater. Along with all my SP's.
And did I mention this was an OCC?
*sigh*

GAME OVER!...

Phew, I'm glad I wasn't doing the OCC at the time .

I mean Deidre of all the people! Deidre, the one who wouldn't hurt an ant! Deidra, one of the most pacifist pesonalities in the game! Deidre who is now burning in hell for her crimes against the Planetlovers...

Another thing, the NCF Planetbustered every single base I took over from them (turn 1: I take the base over, turn 2: the base is in smoke, along with their own units and, sometimes, one of their own bases ). I mean, nuke your own people...

This just reminds me that I need to check up my infiltrators a lot more now, especialy the Security Nexus. And get a couple of probes to disable the PB silos .

Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

I've noticed that the AI get more PB-happy in two cases, a) a bunch of SP are clustered in one base and b) they are hopelessly behind, but have PB tech. I don't have a formula figured out, but this comes from my observations from about 2yrs of SMAC. does anyone else see this as well???

altho I've never seen Diedre do THAT!

Reminds me of the time Yang and I got into a PB lobbing match, which he had started out of nowhere. After we each dusted 10 of the other's cities across a rather large ocean, all our bases were out of range of Fusion Planet Busters. So I built an aircraft carrier and parked it halfway between our bases ...

Suffice to say I won that exchange.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

My last SP game saw me in pact with Zakharov for over 150 turns, only for him to eventually get sick of 'wealth' and break the pact. 3 turns later, he lauches a PB at Autumn Grove, wiping out 3 SP's. I get a bit mad at this and launch a few (say 8-9) back at him (making sure I get the most bang for my buck by targeting units within multiple base radius etc). The sea rises 450 metres in 40 years, drowning a good few thousand unfortunate souls from all factions.

Just as Zak has lost the will to fight, Santiago (who up until know was content to be belligerent and at truce) decides it's time for Song of Planet to go in a fusion haze. 6 Sp's bite the dust with that, including the omnipotent 'Dream Twister', 'XenoDome' and 'Neural Amp' combo. I content myself with the complete eradication of Sparta and give up any hope of overall victory. Unfortunately, Morgan (a long time friend) has been somewhat untouched by the recent events and stampedes over planet like you wouldn't believe. Eventually he gets sick of my begging and decides it's time for me to go also. Throw in 3-4 'pops' and an eruption per turn due to ridiculous planet-harm and you get a game straight out of the Twilight Zone. Brilliant.

The best games are those you lose.

Got spare money?

It's funny how the leaders really seem to have distinct personalities. Some of the "Erratic" leaders come across as very aggressive (Lal, Santiago, Domai) and even some of the supposed pacifists (Deirdre, Morgan) are big jerks.

No matter what I do, Domai doesn't like me. That's in character, I suppose, for a labor society - socialistic, interventionalist, never satisfied with the state of his fellow workers elsewhere (except the image is tarnished somewhat by the fact that he always uses Free Market). I'm thinking of not using him any more because no-one's beaten him since I got Alien Crossfire. Even when he was wedged between the Spartans and the Caretakers he was still ahead of both of them on the power scale. AI Svensgaard (who I don't see much because I usually play Pirates) is very polite to me but gets in wars with everyone else and wants me to come bail him out. Morgan acts like a true businessman (he once sold me Gene Splicing for 150 credits). Coming back to the topic somewhat, Deirdre is quite aggressive for a pacifist. Especially after she gives you the "systematic rape of Planet's limited resources" speech. I've never been nuked by her, but she has pulled the aggressive city-building trick on me. I once lost half of my territory that way, and when I declared war I got the integrity hit. It doesn't seem fair.

Some leaders get really, really mad if you commit atrocities against them. A while ago, during my failed intellectual period as the University, my capital had been conquered by Santiago. Morgan to my north hated me for using Green, and Lal to my south was indifferent. So, having nothing left to lose, I decided to put all my resources into building nuclear weapons. Sparta Command vanished into a cloud of radioactive gas, followed by Defiance Freehold, Admiralty Base, and U.N. Planning Authority. Santiago went completely berserk. She launched air raids on my cities using nerve gas, and she obliterated my largest surviving base immediately after capturing it. The moral of the story is: Always suck up to Santiago when playing Zakharov.

if you are gonna nuke, try to be prepared to survive the counter-strike. have probes disable their critical builds in cities, build ODP, Flechette Def, etc. sometimes this means holding off revenge for few turns. Oh, try this tactic: perform a spoiler attack within nuke zone range of your target. the enemy will concentrate their army there to stop you. toss the PB when you're surrounded. viola! enemy army crippled, base dead and you free up a few minerals.

as a standard tactic, I always build two groups of probes when I get the tech. one group defends my bases, one sub-group acts as a mobile reserve for stopping invasions, and the second group I move into position near any potential enemy. these hide out various places (land and sea), ready to strike and/or steal if someone decides to play naughty.... I pass up a pure revenge strikes to target specific unit/SP builds or attack forces.

I have been attaced with nukes only once by AI, and the attacer was Deidre. She failed miserably (due to my 20+ ODP's).
And once I witnessed a nuclear war between two AI's: Sparta and Hive. They pummeled each other to oblivion, and the rest was too easy for me

Has anybody else seen nuclear war between AI's, and not being dragged into it?

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Ohhhh yes....there was a particularly nasty exchange between Lal + Dee vs. Yang + Miriam.....I think in all, nearly a dozen nukes were launched, while I kept my Morganite head down, and terraformed the daylights out of my coast!

When the radioactive dust settled, I was the only one who still had a continent, thanks to rising sea levels...sheesh!

Yeah, Deirdre was the first AI faction to PB me as well. It was back in my early days of SMAC, and I really didn't pay too much attention to what the other factions were doing. Luckily, I wasn't the SP hog I've become so I didn't lose too much, three bases if I remember correctly. She was way ahead of everyone on a huge map. Nice continent ringed with sea bases. I was in the process of invading, making hard-won headway... It's nice to be the Spartans sometimes! I remember being like "WTF was that!" Couldn't put it together at first, just saw the nice new pond where Assassin's Redoubt used to be... The second and last time it was Zakharov. I was Morgan, and had conquered Dee on the way to his lands. Was using a former gaian base as a staging area, almost my whole army in the area. Boom! Needless to say it took a lot longer to take him out... But I learned a valuable lesson about spacing out your forces when under threat of nuclear attack!

Just thought I'd add that Deirdre without exception has always been the toughest AI faction, on average anyway, in all of my games. Especially if left alone for a while! And the ONLY faction to ever attempt becoming supreme leader, nearly succeeding! 'Course she's my favorite to play, so I don't face her that often...
