Lets go to the moon Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

If one of the options to win in Civ 3 is to be the first to launch a spaceship to the moon, then the game stops? Or do you have a chance to perhaps see you landing on the moon etc.?

Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

My understanding is that the game does not end until the ship reaches Alpha Centauri. It's just that all the ships are of equal speed and configuration, so if someone launches it first, you have only so much time to stop it (by taking their capital, if Civ3 uses the same system as in Civ2).

When I play Civ2 without bloodlust on, other civs would steal all the ship-building tech from me, share all their info and QUICKLY launch a ship. But mine would always be much faster, so I could launch later and still win, perhaps with just fewer people on board than I had hoped.

It seems that this option won't be available to me with Civ3 -- gad, another challenge!

Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations: Deluxe Edition

I'm not sure that launching a spaceship should even be a means to victory. I mean, say you're building your ship but are being systematically gobbled up on the battlefield. Just before your last city bites the dust, you launch or the ship arrives at AC, whatever the victory condition is. You lose on earth, but win in space. Why does that give you a total game victory? I think launching the starship should just be a major bonus to your civ score.

Probably too late to get them to change it though - it's a Civ tradition.

Victory on launch is silly. What event is remembered more, the first landing on the moon or the launching of that mission?

It also doesn't allow for the mission being aborted due to "technical difficulties" or "calamities". Apollo 13 being an example.
