Big Civ = Dead Game? Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations: Deluxe Edition

Why is it, when you become so big and the game has been playing for so long, the AI 'decides' to give up, go idle, yknow?

Does this happen in Civ3?

What do you mean by the AI decides to give up?
I don't really understand the question. All I know is that if I become to big, those guys will sign triple/ four way/ five way alliances against me saying that I'M the aggressor, when I didn't fire one shot!

Got spare money?

Sn00py, et al.:

The only time I see the AI go "dormant," so to speak, is when it is the "supreme" power in the game. Then, especially after it has discovered The Corporation, the AI often puts its cities into "capitalization" mode (i.e. builds nothing). That torques me off. I wish the AI would keep building military divisions and whatnot until it conquered the world or got its buttocks kicked in trying.

i've seen the ai give up alot of times, when you're really REALLY kicking ass, and it does kinda suck, they could atleast make a last ditch effort to stop me.

Have you played on King level? For some reason only at that difficulty they seem to fight to the bitter end unless the AI is being beaten by the AI.

I dont know, but I really hope that it doesnt happen the way it did in Civ-2. The problem? Well, it was two-folded:

- An AI that after a while concentrated on only 2-3 AI-civs - the other 2-3 became passive "AI leftover-empires", despite plenty of fertile virgin land waiting to be exploited, and despite lack of competition (alone on a big island).

- An AI that after a while simply "gave up" on adding city-improvements and improve city-areas (or at least down-prioritised it). Instead everything was focused on A: building wonders, and B: producing too many build- and upkeep-expensive combat-units shuffling back and fourth all over the place - most often to no avail whatsoever.

i've played games where i got a REALLY GOOD START, and even got some nomad huts.

so i'd have like 20 super cities and the ai would have like 3.

In my games the other civs just built settlers. They would build thousands and thousands of the little blighters until every forest had been chopped down and every plain irrigated and railroaded. After this the settlers just milled aimlessly and occasionally walking into my territory - there was nowhere left to build.

As a result of this, all their cities were reduced to four or five population points and never grew due to the strain of maintaining its army of completely useless settlers, thus meaning the vast majority of their acres of railroaded farmland was never used.

Strange thing that Civ2 AI...

Uber, I'm playing a game like that right now. I am the Protugese and have about 20 cities (most of which are already irrigated somewhat and have roads). The next largest civ is the Persians and they have maybe half the cities I do. Sigh. No challenge in that game. Maybe I'll just start over.

Maybe it's time to move up to the next difficulty level, unless you're playing Deity, in which case I suggest you give yourself a handicap, i.e. don't found your capital for 20 turns.

Dan, I'd really like to know if this happens in Civ3, it was such a let down... what is the point of being a super power when all others go dormant?
